Forgotten password

Hi everyone Happy New Year I have a simple problem that I can't seem to figure out so I'm hoping someone can advise me on how to solve it. I'm running Vista on a Dell Inspiron and have forgotten the log on password no matter what I put in it says it's incorrect. I need to know what steps can I take to bypass the password get in so I can reset. I've tried using the reset button on the log in screen i keep getting an error message...please help
