Forgotten password

by generalpowell / November 27, 2009 2:52 AM PST

I am hooking up a computer that I haven't used in a while. It is password protected and I do not remember the password. What is the best way to get past my password so I can access the programs as administrator?

BIOS or OS password?

If operating system, what operating system and version (i.e. XP Home or XP Pro).
If XP, it's not uncommon to find that someone missed setting a password for "the" administrator account. Or, you might google "password reset utility". They exist.

Reset your passwords

I use Spotmau Password Genius to reset passwords. For $20.00 I downloaded a file to create a bootable cd. Spotmau will burn a cd for you for an additional $4-5.00. All you need to do is get into your setup page at start up, change the setting to boot from cd, restart, and it will come up with a menu for you to create a new password. I have used this disk several times during the past couple of years. I have four computers, and sometimes I change my kids passwords if I find them doing something stupid. Then I forget.
