Foreign bread

Sep 12, 2017 3:46PM PDT

It really isn't complaining about the product, it was good, darn good. The fact I found out later it was produced in Canada. Meijer a large regional store sold them. They do have or thought they had local bakery. I don't know the full details but that sour dough bread was great. I suppose many of the other deli type breads are too if they changed their operation of a bakery source. I check closer next time, that's for sure. Yeah, being in Ohio is really close to Canada. If the USA can't make bread locally even if big store, geez what a trade balance gone amok. Happy -----Willy Wink

It seemed folks enjoyed driving by the place. It smelled rather good. We also have an Anheuser-Busch brewery on the north end. When the wind is right, the smell is rather nasty. I wonder if those who enjoy beer would want to have one down wind of the place.

The "beer" smell is from an intermediate

product I believe. Similar [same?] smell on a tour of Vernor's ginger ale plant in the Cub Scouts.
Side note: Rule of thumb is, buy soft drinks from spirits people. Lots of equipment and processes overlap, and the companies want quality products to promote each other. Best root beer and ginger ale I ever had is made by a NM craft brewer. Tipoff: Children usually don't like it; real flavor.

Another nice smell was from a processing plant

for Sunkist, a citrus grower's co-op by a freeway in CA. They made rinds into cleaning liquids.

I learned about Meijer when I visited my brother in MI.

In appearance it was a junior grade Walmart, unkempt aisles and such. But I got to like the selection and prices. I didn't know it's a Canadian outfit. Let's make bread great again, eh?
A western market chain, Ralph's, had its own bakery that was huge. Ran all night. The idea is to control the process and pricing, and the bread can be better. Theirs was.

As I read, Meijer is headquarted in Michigan

and some spinoff of Fred Meyer stores. We don't have Fred's but we do have Meijers in Ohio. They've survived where others have failed. I think your junior Walmart description is a good one. It's the first store I remember that one could buy both bread and bullets.

I checked the bread bag, the bakery is ACE Bakery in Canada. The odd thing is the corp. office or LLC is here in Gaffney, SC. Bread is shipped all over the USA??? As I've always stated not enough USA outfits can do this. -----Willy Happy
