Forced to download Itunes 7.0.2, now Itunes won't open...

Feb 9, 2007 12:21PM PST

Hello - We'll get to my fault in a moment, but buying a new Ipod shuffle required that I upgrade my old 6.?? Itunes to the latest version. I downloaded it through Software Update, not thinking that I should have read anything re system requirements. The download was stopped once due to a dial-up failure, but picked up again, and seemed to finish well, 'optimizing volume' etc...I lost some 6mb from the HD free count, and the Itunes icon is now blue, indicating that it's 'there' in some form at least. But now I can't even open the Itunes program; each attempt immediately results in a flag saying 'Itunes has unexpectedly quit', and offers to send a bug report to the authorities...This is consistent. Now, reading some background on the download, I see that I don't meet some of the system requirements, eg: 1] Quicktime is required; I trashed that long ago, but willing to get it again if it'll help. 2] OS at least 10.3.9; got that. 3] 500 mhz required; 800 here, should be OK. 4] Combo/Super drive for burning cd's; got a combo drive; why is that super required? Reading some archived forum posts from all sources it appears these later Itunes apps are prone to issues; sad, but probably unavoidable. If permanently ousted from the truly modern world of the latest Itunes/Ipod, fine. Prefer not to, but I can return the Ipod, but how would I at least get back my ability to open the program?

iTunes

I often wondered how anyone managed to keep their OS X machines up to date with only a dial up connection. It must take forever to bring your machine up to date.

Issues with the later versions of iTunes/QT were really only evident on the Windows side of the market, there has not been a stream of complaints here about the Mac version.

On with the problem. Open Utilities folder and launch Disk Utilities. Run Repair Disk Permissions on your boot volume and see if that makes any difference.
QuickTime is required for iTunes work work properly and was probably NOT part of the software update download. You can download QuickTIme, without iTunes, from the Quicktime page of Apple.com.

Just as a matter of interest, why did you trash QT in the first place?

You meet the system requirements quite easily. The requirements do not say that a Super is required, it just says that a Combo drive OR SuperDrive is required to burn CD's. You either have a Combo drive that burns CD's or you have a Superdrive that burns CD's, it all depends on which Mac you have.

Bingo!...and sorry...

Wifi'ed QT from the local library this morning; Itunes now works perfectly - Many Thanks. All things 'download' while stuck on a dial-up must be carefully planned; assemble a list of all Software Updates, new albums, etc; then decide on the library or the locally owned coffee shop. Not a terrible fate really; my upload speeds equal the wretched IE at the office with a Win 2000 peecee. And can one imagine the torture of having to download all those bug/virus 'service packs' from microsoft while on dial-up? I'd volunteer to stay on dial-up forever if just one person could successfully explain why they chose a windows product! QT was trashed because with dial-up the 'streaming' of video should actually be called 'buffering watching'; I have sufficient self-inflicted penalties without adding to the list.
I must have missed the 'submit' button yesterday after composing a reply to your fine solution, but 'ere tis...Thanks again P, Eric

Glad it worked out for you.

Yep, I remember dial up and video streams. Not fun

Good luck

Don't trash QT ever!
Feb 11, 2007 6:23AM PST

Eric,

QT is the backbone of practically everything involving pictures, audio and video on the Mac, so don't trash this program. You never answered the question about why you trashed it in the first place. I'm curious too about this. I'm assuming to save HD space. Anyways, with some select plug-ins or ancillary program downloads, QT will run most Windows Media files. Upgrading to QT Pro allows you to save many streaming videos directly off the web (not all), allows you to save many video files to-and-from the WMV format, and converts audio to-and-from many formats. But that's only important if you need to do stuff like that.

Combo Drive vs Super Drive: Combo allows the playback of both CDs and DVDs but only allows burning of CDs. Super Drive does the same but also allow the burnng of DVDs. If you ever want to make DVDs from a DV camcorder, the iLife package of programs is extremely easy, intuitive and satisfying. All the programs in iLife also rely on QT to work.

Trashing QT
Feb 11, 2007 9:59AM PST

I did, clearly, address why I chose to trash QT, and afterward suffered no consequences regarding how I view pictures, watch DVD's, or enjoy Itunes, both purchasing and listening. The rub came when the new Ipod shuffle required an ITunes update to 7.02.; for my uses, a completely unneccesary requirement. My computer use is informational in nature; I don't have any of the 'flash' devices either, preferring not to see a colorful leaping turkey covered with mortgage percent offerings or angrily gesturing 'singers' while I'm reading an interesting page of text. I also want no Windows products on the harddrive; can't think of one advantage to any of them over freeware or Apple. For media enjoyment, I have a TV in the closet, ready for something not inherently vulgar.

QT
Feb 12, 2007 8:07AM PST

Sorry, I went back to your original post and see that you "gained 6MB space", so that explained it. I didn't realize that you didn't use your Mac's programs that most come with, like iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD. My mistake. Those rely on QT. I forgot that the Mac also comes with an Application called Preview, which will allow you to view photos and a number of documents and DVD player is a stand-alone Application. It's a pain when certain devices require a certain version of a software to be loaded. I've had movies that did require QT 7 instead of the old version 6.X. Once one upgrades, it's sometimes like Pandora's box...there's a ripple effect and everything needs to be compatible with the software version update.

OK, it might not have been a "stream of complaints", but I'm only one clown!

Howdy Peter!
January was a good month, if it's good to work so much that you don't have time to deposit the checks, ... and they turn off the electricity as a result.

I had the morning off, nothing pressing to do, and somehow ended up here. I thought this was a porn site when I clicked on it. You guys need more content. Macs are only sexy when compared to other computers.

Nice to see you're holding down the fort so well. Not many trolls left. Did you call Orkin, or just set traps?

Take it easy and work really hard.

Oh yeah, send the odd check or two to the power and light people.

iTunes
Feb 21, 2007 9:25PM PST

I am facing a similar issue here I guess. Running the latest of everything on my Powerbook G4 (Mac OS X 10.4.Cool, iTunes 7.0.2, QT Pro 7.1.3. Everything is patched to the latest version. When I start iTunes, the icon is shown in the task switcher (command-tab), but that's about it.

Switching to it yields nothing. It doesn't even show on the menu bar.

The last plugin I have installed was iConcertCal, which I have since uninstalled, but that did not help much. Searching with Spotlight for iConcertCal give me zero results, so it should be gone.

Any ideas? Repairing Permissions didn't change anything.

thanks in advance
Dennis

Couple of things
Feb 22, 2007 1:12AM PST

1. Launch iTunes with the option key held down. What happens?

2. Take a look at the Console and see if you can see any error messages relating to iTunes.
