General discussion

For the benefit of all at Speakeasy may I refer you to the

Nizkor Project on Fallacies in Arguments.
http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/

The site is primarily about the Holocaust, but it has the best rundown of Fallacious Arguments that I've seen, even better than the Logic text I was required to study in order to get an MA in History. You have to try to put together a logical argument when writing a History paper, and one avoiding obvious pitfalls. Unfortunately political discussions abound with these pitfalls. A lot of them are in Latin and date from Roman jurisprudence or Medieval rediscovery of Roman jurisprudence and the study thereof, which was carried out in Latin.
Fallacies
Argumentum ad Hominem. Your argument is not valid because you are a despicable person, or are not worth listening to. There's a lot of this one floating around here.

Argumentum ad hominem tu quoque. Your argument is invalid because you do something that is inconsistent with the argument. Like a smoker advocating non-smoking. Note, it is a fallacy to assert that a smoker's opinion on not smoking is invalid because he smokes.

Appeal to Authority, or Argumentum ad Verecundiam.
It must be true because this or that authority says its true. Hence WMDs. or the use of FoxNews, NewsMax or any of the other tame news sources which follow the Republican, or Administration line.

Appeal to Belief, or to Popularity, or Common Wisdom.
The Bible says ... 85% of the people support the President ... Everybody knows that ... The President's approval rating has fallen to 31% (he still could be right and his opposition wrong)

Appeal to Common Practice.
Everybody cheats a bit on their taxes so ...

Appeal to consequences of a Belief.
The consequences of a belief have no bearing on whether the belief is true or false. "I believe X is true because accepting that X is true has positive consequences." There are about 6 more variations on this belief.

Appeal to emotion. Just look at any political convention and the bounce the party gets after it in the polls. If you vote for me I'll cut your taxes, just because most of the money goes to the top one percent is no reason not to feel happy about it.

Appeal to fear. The argument for the development of the Department of Homeland Security. If we don't do this they will overwhelm us (and just where are those millions of terrorists coming to overwhelm us).

There are also Appeals to Flattery, Novelty, Pity, Popularity, Ridicule, Spite, and Tradition

There is also the Bandwagon effect, which is why reporting is curtailed until the polls are closed in California.

Begging the Question. the premises include the claim that the conclusion is true, or (directly or indirectly) assume that the conclusion is true.

Use of a Biased Sample. Like asking an opinion of something on Speakeasy, the opinion will reflect a conservative bias.

Another common one here, Attacking the Straw Man.
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person's actual position and substitutes or restates it in a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. viz
Person A has position X.
Person B restates position X as position Y
Person B then demolishes position Y.
Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an refutation of the position itself.

There are a total of 42 fallacies, which is more than I ever learned, but I think some which are considered here as individual issues were lumped together in my old logic book.

Normally the classic syllogism to prove something involves 3 statements the last of which combines elements of the first 2 into a statement you want to prove or be true. If either of the first 2 statements is false, the conclusion is false.
From the Appeal to Authority:

Person A is (claimed to be) an authority on subject S.
Person A makes claim C about subject S.
Therefore, C is true.
Well, it may be, but just because A is an authority, and he is speaking about his field of expertise he could still be wrong unless he can provide evidence.

Its at least worth a read in order to tone down some of the accusations flying around.

Ed, it drives me crazy that you have no spiel checker !
May 24, 2006 7:14AM PDT

Considering the amount of misspelled words on some of your posts it's always amusing when you point out my editorial deficiencies... But I do go nuts when I see ''to'' used instead of ''too'' so I'll give consideration to your complaint. LOL

As for your ''how can I reply?'' You can't because I'm giving you nothing to play semantical games with.

For all the rhetoric that Rob writes here everyday about the US, I see the same if not more directed at ''liberals'' (really boring term now BTW), foreigners, non christians, etc. by regular SE members. I read through most of it and agree with some from the right and some from the left. I don't buy into nationalist jingoism no more than the ''world would be perfect if we all just got along'' BS. All politicians are corrupt to a certain extent in my view and I could never place my unquestioning belief in any party. I'm glad for you that you have the peace of mind from unquestioning loyalty (and I am sincere when I say that).

Rob raises some interesting points sometimes - I will pick through the chaff to find the wheat. One may not like the particular examples Rob uses but the discussion of argumentative tactics was educational. While I'm not comparing you to Rob I will say I find some of your comments insightful as well. I think you deny reality sometimes but I'm sure you have the same opinion of me.

I've said before that I am a lousy typist..
May 24, 2006 7:44AM PDT

but there is a difference between that and persistently making the same grammatical errors over and over.

I am not talking about political difference or differences of opinion or anything like that. Those things don't bother me at all. I am talking about the constant slander and very toxic sludge that emanates from a particular source almost every day. If you don't see it you are wearing blinders.

I am not playing a semantic game wih you. I told you that before. I don't consider this a game. We are not scoring debating points. I am trying to solve a real issue here.

I don't have "unquestioning loyalty" to anyone or any thing. That is false and insulting in itself.

I think you deny reality sometimes but I'm sure you have the same opinion of me. You bet.

BTW I hope you are not claiming I confuse "too" and "to".

It's also about expressing my own opinions on issues that concern me.

Many programs on tv
May 24, 2006 4:46AM PDT

are educational and interesting....it doesn't make them all factual, and only history itself will show whether GWB was right or wrong. Right after 9-11 there were emails going on everywhere regarding that tragedy (examples are listed below). Although educational and interesting there were no facts to back up the speculation.

Example 1... 9-11 (Sept 11)

9 + 1 + 1 = 11

Sept 11 is the 254th day of the year.

2 + 5 + 4 = 11

There are 111 days left in the year.

The twin towers resemble the number 11.

Flight #11 was the first plane to strike the tower.

92 people were on Flight # 11.

9 + 2 = 11

Flight #65 was the second to strike.

6 + 5 = 11

"New York City" has 11 letters.

"Afghanistan" has 11 letters.

"The Pentagon" has 11 letters.and, finally
:
"PAYBACK TIME" has 11 letters !!

Example 2... "In the year of the new century and nine months,From the sky will come a great King of Terror.... The sky will burn at forty-five degrees.
Fire approaches the great new city...
In the city of york there will be a great collapse,2 twin brothers torn apart by chaos while the fortress falls the great leader will succumb third big war will begin when the big city is burning"

Nostradamus

He said this will be bigger than the previous two.
2001 is the first year of the new century and this is the 9th month. New York is located at the 41st degree Latitude.

I think the best one that was circulated was the following....and this one is full of facts AND attitude.

Well, you hit the World Trade Center, but you missed America.

You hit the Pentagon, but you missed America.

You used helpless American bodies, to take out other American bodies, but like a poor marksman, you STILL missed America.

Why? Because of something you guys will never understand. America isn't about a building or two, not about financial centers, not about military centers. America isn't about a place. America isn't even about a bunch of bodies. America is about an IDEA. An idea that you can go someplace where you can earn as much as you can figure out how to, live for the most part, like you envisioned living, and pursue Happiness. We can't guarantee that you'll reach it, but we give you the chance to try!

Go ahead and whine your terrorist whine, and chant your terrorist litany: "If you can not see my point, then feel my pain."

This concept is alien to Americans. We live in a country where we don't have to see your point. But you're free to have one. We don't have to listen to your speech. But you're free to say one. Don't know where you got the strange idea that everyone has to agree with you. We don't agree with each other in this country, almost as a matter of pride. We're a collection of guys that don't agree, called States. We united our individual states to protect ourselves from tyranny in the world. Another idea, we made up on the spot.

You CAN make it up as you go, when it's your country.
If you're free enough.

Yeah, we're fat, sloppy, easy-going goofs most of the time. That's an unfortunate image to project to the world, but it comes from feeling free and easy about the world you live in. It's unfortunate too, because people start to forget that when you attack Americans, they tend to fight like a cornered badger. The first we knew of the War of 1812, was when England burned Washington D.C. to the ground.

Didn't turn out like England thought it was going to, and it's not going to turn out like you think, either. Sorry, but you're not the first bully on our shores, just the most recent.

In WW2, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, this was meant to break our spirit and scatter us. Did it work? No. All it succeeded in doing was uniting us to the point where hundreds of thousands of Americans joined the service within days.

Our country is peaceful, but fierce when stirred to anger. We are sleeping giants, gentle giants. But we can be savages when necessary. When the spirit of America is threatened we do not cower or run. We unite! And when we unite, we are the most feared force on the face of this planet. You terrorist commonly underestimate American resolve. That was your first mistake.

So who just declared war on us? It would be nice to point to some real estate, like the good old days. Unfortunately, we're probably at war with random camps, in far-flung places that think they're safe; just like the Barbary Pirates did. They were wrong. So are you. Better start sleeping with one eye open.

There's a spirit that tends to take over people who come to this country, looking for opportunity, looking for liberty, looking for freedom. Even if they misuse it. The Marielistas that Castro emptied out of his prisons, were overjoyed to find out how much freedom there was.

First thing they did when they hit our shores, was run out and buy guns. The ones that didn't end up dead, ended up in prisons. It was a big problem then (especially in south Florida). We solved that problem. As for you, you're only the newest problem, not the first.

You guys seem to be incapable of understanding that we don't live in America. America lives in US! American Spirit is what it's called. And killing a few thousand of us, or a few million of us, won't change it. Most of the time, it's a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of Spirit. Until we're crossed in a cowardly manner, then it becomes an entirely different kind of Spirit.

Wait until you see what we do with that Spirit, this time.

Sleep tight, if you can.

The problem, EdH, is that for many here, ''slander''
May 24, 2006 5:23AM PDT

is defined as ''whatever I disagree with.'' And those same folks tend to deal with unpleasant facts (like global warming, for instance, which even the chairman of Chevron-Texaco recently called ''established scientific fact'' in a Today show interview) is to claim that it simply isn't so. For many of those same people, repeating such a fact therefore becomes ''slander.''
