Question

For Samsung 2016 4K TV - Buy Protection Plan? Yes? No?

Sep 13, 2016 4:39PM PDT

im planning on getting the samsung 65" model UN65KS8000FXZA

best buy has 2 year 'geek squad' protection for $230 or 5 years for $450

what is your advice on getting one of these? i think i would at least get the 2 year plan, id rather not pay $450 for 5 years unless that is advisable. i dont know how often these new samsung's would have to have an expensive repair. my last samsung is probably 8-10 years old and has never had a single problem. thanks!!

Answer
Read the fine print.

The last time I read it, a clause had me underline it and say, no deal.

Look for a statement that if they can't repair it, they can refund the cost of the warranty to get out of the deal. As this plan changes over time I can't guess what it is today.

Also, how much is the TV?

hdmi cable question?
Sep 14, 2016 1:07AM PDT

the tv is $1900. i found out that if you get the 2 year plan, you can re-subscribe to that at the end of the 2 years for a cheaper price, so that sounds like a good idea.

i have a different question - my hdmi cable from my receiver to my current tv is not a "high speed hdmi" im sure, its probably 6-8 years old, so will i need to get a 'high speed hdmi' cable right away for the new tv, or is that not necessary until im either watching a true 4k program or playing the ps4 pro which isnt out yet. or is it needed just to improve the picture quality period and to help with or allow at all the upscaling the tv does. thanks!

The thing is, that's a 10 buck or less cable.

The AmazonBasics are fine and under 10 bucks. One of the moneymakers at stores are cables. Don't fall for it.

CNET has numerous articles on HDMI cables if you don't believe me.

Unlike analog, HDMI is digital so there will be no improvement with a better cable. If you hear such a line, that salesperson, find their mute button and press it.
