The answer is that Microsoft does not allow this. The new versions enforce the license so you get to purchase one license per machine.

If you are trying to share one license among many users by placing it on a network drive, the answer is no. No it does not work. No, Microsoft programmed it not to work. No, it does not work.

If you just need more Office copies you can use Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org or buy enough MS Office licenses.
