footnote numbering

by diver110 / July 3, 2007 3:22 AM PDT

In an article I am writing, I want their to be a footnote thanking certain people. As is traditionally done, I want this to be done with an * instead of a number, and then switch to numbering when I get into the article proper. I have been able to do this in the past, but now cannot seem to get it to work. I know how to set footnotes to either an * or a number, but I can't seem to get it to swich from one to the other. It is all or nothing. Any ideas? Thanks.

Isn't the numbering system of footnotes (like page numbering) defined for a section? Then insert a section break in between.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kees. That did not toally work, as the first footnote number is 2, but better than it was.

I've got a button 'Options ...' (in Word 2000) that lets me specify the starting number. Set it to one, and it should work fully.

I use Word 2003. I don't have an options button. I can restart footnote numbers for a particular section, but it sort of wreaks havoc, creating an unwanted page break, and it only renumbers one note, so it skips from 1 to 3. Wierd. Word is such a clunky program. Wordprefect is much better, but I gave up on it because I live in a Word world.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
