If you have installed fonts this way before without problems, I may not be of much help. You do not need to put the downloaded file into the font folder but any temporary folder you create for this purpose. Make sure the downloaded file is in the proper format (usually .ttf). You install through the control panels font icon, of course by selecting File/install new font. You point to the file in the temp or other directory designated and can install several at once if you wish. This will register and relocate the font to the font directory where it will be available easily to applications. If this is what you are doing and it does not work, there is a handy little utility called "TweakUI from Microsoft that has a feature that will repair a damaged font folder.
