Following ---- Why is my CPU running at %100

May 12, 2005 6:46PM PDT

I was one of the members that followed the CPU usage item.
I took the advice re opening MSconfig - did as the correspondent advised and Bang my Pc demanded RE Registration which I did with Microsoft
I lost my Restore point (nothing prior to yesterday) and I am getting -- Windows cannot find (then a row of small squares -- like a machine code possibly) then the next window says desk top could not load --and the same squares again--Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove Ref from Registry (the file is NOT given a name as such just the squares
I run Reg Mechanice, Spybot and Adware -- and Nothing shown
Also did a Disk Check
The Registry is not a place I venture

I am Running Win XP

CPU usage item
May 12, 2005 10:10PM PDT

Which "item" or post are you referring to and what problems where you having prior to this?
Stopping items loading in msconfig shouldn't result in a windows reactivation, it is hardware based only - So unless you have some software loading which requires the system to recognise a hardware item (such as a legacy item) or unless the bios in conjunction with the system (coincidently) didn't recognise an hardware item during boot, then I cant see the 2 are related. So please elaborate.

After Following instructions in ''HIGH CPU USAGE''
May 13, 2005 12:21AM PDT

WINDOWS XP Home Edition
Hello Pete
Sorry about my delay Re responce.
I have been searching the ''suggestions'' in response to the question being asked --- Why is my 'CPU so busy' an on going subject over the passed weeks on CNET.
I can not find the article that suggested the use of MSconfig so I am afraid I am asking you to work blind so to speak unless you read the item.
I followed the instructions VERY carefully (the only way I do anything with computers, being a novice) and it appears I have gone a step to far.
I must addmit that other than the strange windows with the squares I get on start up, (I have Jpegs of these windows if they would help and you can suggest an address)
My PC (Oh dare I say it) APPEARS to be running better!!!!!! the only other clue is that my Restore Point appears to start yeterday no earlier point to which I can return just as thought the PC was new as from the 12 may yet other data in IE and OE and the like is there it's WAY beond me I'm afraid!!!!
Would you be so kind as to identify what a Legacy Item is?.

Thanks for your thoughts and Ideas. If All else fails a possible trip to the computer shop will be needed
But a BIG thank you anyway
Clive

Lets start from the beginning

1/Tell me what problems you were having in the beginning.
2/ Tell me what you did to try and solve the problem -
3/ You say you followed the instructions from the other posting to use msconfig -What alteration did you make using msconfig?
4/what problems occurred after using msconfig?
5/ When do these small windows appear, when you load the system (before logging in), or when you reach your desk top?
6/ Are these windows permanent - how big are they and how many are there, and what text appears inside or next to them?.
7/ Have you got a virus program and spyware programs - what are they called and have you ran them and are the definitions up to date?
8/You say you only have one restore point - how big is your hard disk and how much free space has it got. And how much space is alerted to restore points goto "start/settings/control panel/system/restore point/advanced" the amount in Mb and % should be given (12% by default).
9/ You asked me what "legacy" means:- it can refer to older non windows programs, drivers, or non plug&play hardware. Why did you ask this question? Was it because you had to "reactivate" your computer with Microsoft.
10/ How long have you had your computer and have you been adding/changing hardware ?
11/ Have you had problems with hardware not working which maybe related to this problem?
12/ Do you have a legacy item, if so what are they?

Please reply to the above questions mirroring your answers to my questions where possible.
I wouldn't be running to the computer shop just yet!

Lets start from the beginning

1/Tell me what problems you were having in the beginning.
Ans -- PC was freezing with 100% CPU usage (Task Manager Indicated) -- always when opening up my internet provider -- BT BroadBand but often when just carring out ordinary PC work (since MY EFFORTS this APPEARS to be NOT HAPPENING

2/ Tell me what you did to try and solve the problem Ans --- Upgraded my Virus set up from Trend Internet Security Version 11 to Trend 2005 (the possibility that the firewall was demanding high CPU was muted by BT

3/ You say you followed the instructions from the other posting to use msconfig - What alteration did you make using msconfig?
Ans -- I ticked Diagnostic Set up AS told and pressed OK -- I was then told I had to Reg MS within 3 days Which I did (over the phone) and when rebooting was presented with ''these windows''

4/what problems occurred after using msconfig?
Ans -- The Windows (with the squares) appear and I lost any earlier Retore points I havent found any addition faults TODATE

5/ When do these small windows appear, when you load the system (before logging in), or when you reach your desk top?
Ans -- When reaching Desk TOP

6/ Are these windows permanent - how big are they and how many are there, and what text appears inside or next to them?.
Ans -- removed by kicking OK in the boxes
NB -- When NORMAL START UP is selected in MSconfig but vanish when Selective Start Up is ticked ( I have disconected my Printer recently due to a move around Although this is the only action removal atachment carried out todate ?? relavant.
They are a 8* by 2'' window in the middle of the screen
Messages read -----
No 1- Windows can not find (then the squares)
No 2- Desk top could not load (then the squares)Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove ref from the Registry

Ans --- Yes 1 Trend 2005 up todate
Spybot up todate
Ad-Aware up todate
All have been Run with NO solution

8/You say you only have one restore point - how big is your hard disk and how much free space has it got. And how much space is alerted to restore points goto ''start/settings/control panel/system/restore point/advanced'' the amount in Mb and % should be given (12% by default).
Ans -- 12%(9123MB) Max

9/ You asked me what ''legacy'' means:- it can refer to older non windows programs, drivers, or non plug&play hardware. Why did you ask this question? Was it because you had to ''reactivate'' your computer with Microsoft.
Ans It was not a term/reff I had heard before, But I did have to Reactivte my PC with Microsoft

10/ How long have you had your computer and have you been adding/changing hardware ?
Ans - this PC THREE years NO harware change last 12 months and ony new printer type of thing

11/ Have you had problems with hardware not working which maybe related to this problem?
Ans -- No - other than poss hiccoughs with my external Modem from BT BroadBand but that is on going for over a twelve months (we are at the extream distance for BB and it has a habit of dropping out

12/ Do you have a legacy item, if so what are they?

Thanks Peter
My son came on via WIN VCN yesterday, and had a look at the PC -- he found a simular (LOOKING) Code in MSconfig using Selective Startup and we unticked them --deducing they were reffering to my now ununstalled Canon Printer (He is a PHD in Computer Science and works on a level simullar to your self -- Stratopheric levels above me) when I rebooted the ''WARNING Windows'' had vanished hooray --- but then I was reminded by a message (on the desk top) that I had was not Running in NORMAL Startup and advised to do so when I returned to this setting the Windows Returned.
As he is in California I have not been able to inform him of the developments. He did ask me to thank you for assisting an OLD FUDDY DUDDY LIKE ME -- No respect the kids today (He is a GOOD UN really)
Thank you again for your time and efforts

Now we are getting somewhere!

Diagnostic mode in msconfig stops all eccential things from loading from both the "startup folder" and the "services folder" So it is the broad-brush approach (sledge hammer approach!) Therefore try stopping things loading one at a time - first from the startup folder and then from the non-windows sevices.
By what you have told me it sounds like maybe your graphics card is loading some additional desktop functions in the "startup" folder of msconfig. If this is the case then you must either let this load or alter these functions in your graphics card setup - the same may apply for other things - therefore make sure you know what items appear in your "startup folder of msconfig before you stop them loading.
Not sure if you said, but did you look in "task manager to see what was using a lot of process time.
Therefore try stopping things loading one at a time.
Let me know how you go,
Peter

You can reinstall System Restore with these steps:

1. Click Start, Run, In the Run box, type "C:\windows\inf" without the quotes and press enter.
2. Look for SR.INF and RightClick on it, then select "Install"

Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore will be ready to use.

Clive, you have totally lost me
May 16, 2005 11:10PM PDT

1/What has your screen resolution got to do with your original problem - nothing I gather???
2/ You haven't said if you solved the original problem?
3/ As for your latest problem if your right click on the desk top and then properties then settings - if the slide bar says 800X600 then that's the resolution - however you say things "look like 1024X768" - Its probably your font size or your screen DPI settings which have been altered. Check DPI setting first:-
You will find the DPI setting in the settings/advance - usually set at 96 but you may have had it at another size.
The font size you can change in display propertie/appearance/advanced - word of warning, save font settings before resetting as changing these sizes has a flow on affect which is not obvious or explicitly expressed - hence some fonts maybe changed size which are not specifically named in these settings and its a ****** to find which one it is.

Your problem regarding systems restore
May 16, 2005 11:32PM PDT

Sorry forgot about that part - sr.inf will only reset system restore if there is a problem with it - From what you have told me I cant see the point but it will do no harm (I think) it is better to get to understand why you dont have any restore points - the likely cause are
1/ lack of free disk space - so you need to tell me size of hard disk(s) and free space
2/ you dont have restore turned
3/ size allocated is not enough ( the above and this item are found in systems properties/restore).
4/ You haven't performed a restore point for a while
5/ You have a program which deletes temp files like Norton clean sweep.
Try and make a restore point and see if it works.

Clive,
I think it is best if you dont make any further post until you have sorted yourself and the builders out - After which I need you to clearly address my previous posts and clearly define what your problems are and how I can help. Otherwise we will just keep going around in circles.

!00% CPU usage
May 20, 2005 9:17PM PDT

In going through the message string it is clear the original cause of the problem of 100% cpu usage was never identified. The problem was pattern file 2.594.00 in certain TrendMicro antivirus programs including TrendMicro Internet Security 2005. A detailed explanation of the problem and work-arounds are on the TrendMicro web site. fredvr.

100% CPU Usage
May 22, 2005 7:56PM PDT

Hi

Had same problem recently. Trend Micro emailed users admitting a recent upgrade COULD cause this problem and quickly downloaded a fix which cured the problem.

Maybe that's what caused your problem? You COULD:

DISCONNECT NETWORK CABLE.
Uninstall TrendMicro
Reboot and see if CPU is at 100%.
If yes repost here.
If no reinstall TrendMicro, reboot and see if problem returns. If it does you could email TrendMicro later(a later upgrade will probably fix problem), or try a different AV solution.
RECONNECT NETWORK CABLE when testing complete.
