General discussion

folders do not open in a new window

Aug 28, 2007 1:22PM PDT

Using Vista Home Premimum on HP DV6568SE notebook. The problem is Vista will no longer open seperate windows. All control panel options have been checked. I've called HP, but they are unable to help. The only solution is to create a new user. Using transfer settings causes the problem to continue, so I avoid it. There is no connection to anything I do. Just one day, after booting up, I no longer have the ability to open multiple folders. (I like to use multiple windows to drag items from one location to another.) Are there any registery places I can look or flags I can change?

select folder options, under browse folders check open each folder in its own window. But that won't work it you use the navigation pane. So in computer go to Organize, Layout, Navigation Pane.

I didn't get that exactly right, if you have already changed the folder option in the control panel you need to change it back, then go to computer, Organize, Layout, Navigation Pane. Then go to the Control Panel, Folder Options, Browse Folders, Open each folder in its own window. Otherwise the navigation pane is open in every new folder and it won't work.

Opening new windows for folder options

I've tried all those suggestions already. I'm not a novice at windows and went to the suggested settings immediately. What I'm looking for is the registry key where the value to open each window seperately is located. Since Vista changed the structure, it is not easy to navigate through the options. UAC may be the key to fixing this, but unlike XP or even 98, I am unable to find the location of folder options in the registery.

Thanks for the suggestions, but no change. I'll create a new user then and go from there.
