Folder Associations - .PPT Problems

Aug 3, 2007 4:17AM PDT

System- XP/SP2 - Outlook Express - Do not have MS Power Point - Have downloaded MS Power Point Viewer - in MS Office Folder.. Also started same thread under "Computer Help" - when I searched - more threads for this were found under "XP"

PROBLEM:
1. E-mail attachment with .ppt file will not open. When go to folder options - already have .ppt extension - and it says that it opens with MS Power Point Viewer - however it will not work. I have downloaded the newest version of viewer which replaced the older version (03?). I have changed the icon - still won't open. ???

2. When I attempted to open the attachment - it brought up a dialog box that asked if I wanted to "save" or "open". It also had an option box in the lower left corner that indicated "Always ask" - which I mistakenly unchecked - Now I can't get that back - How do I do that?

Help!!! Stuck in PA

Save the .ppt and then open where you saved it with the power point viewer.

Bob

PS I installed Open Office and from outlook 2000 (on my current work machine) that works for me.

Hey there Proffit - I knew you would be out there !!

Thought about that - use Open Office on my wife's 'puter. Downloaded MS Viewer from their site (free). Still couldn't get the folder to associate correctly. However I did manage to remember that I had buried a utility from a guy by the name of "Ramesh" that fixes this problem. Works with either .pps, or .ppt. After fixing it - I did notice that there was a new "second" MS Power Point Viewer program line with the appropriate icon. I couldn't make that happen - but this fix did the trick. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ppsopen.htm

Now if I can just get the dialog box back that asks if I want to open or save (or cancel) BEFORE I commit to opening the attachment - I'll be all set. Somehow I managed to uncheck that little box without thinking what would happen. I only open attachments that I am expecting - but it would be nice to see that box anyway.

Thanks again for repsonding - vanman4005 in PA

Tufenuf:

Went to the url for Dwight - same response that I have been trying, and also the same directions from Ramesh's page. Still doesn't work. Dwight has a response request at the bottom of his page. I e-mailed him with the screen information from the File Type - Advanced box for the extension. I hope he can provide a fix.

Thanks for the direction - will keep you updated.

Tufenuf -

Every once in a while I manage to remember where I put stuff that I had saved from previous "oops". This is one of them. - Don't know how this guy "Ramesh" came up with this utility - but I had it from a previous .pps problem. Change the box to .ppt - and presto - problem solved. I did notice that when I went to folder options after running it - that there is now another line with a "second" listing for Microsoft Power Point Viewer with the appropriate icon. I couldn't figure out how to do that - but this utility did it in nothing flat.

Great stuff - if you know where to look !! Thanks for reminding me.
