Focus Problem With My Old Canon S1 IS

Mar 5, 2010 9:14PM PST

When I look thru the viewfinder or LCD, I see a pale-violet, out of focus image with jagged and pointed details. I've replaced the memory card and the batteries with no luck.

Any ideas or comments about what may be wromg?

I realize the camera is old, but I hate to discard it if it can be fixed.

Thanks for your feedback,
Bill

Canon S1 IS

It is probably caused by a defective CCD sensor.

The S1 IS is on the list of cameras affected.

If that is the cause -- good news.
Canon will fix the problem free.

It is a long story, so here is where you need to start reading:

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7593_102-0.html?messageID=2901073&tag=forums06;posts#2901073

After you read the whole story and determine it is a bad CCD sensor, you should TELEPHONE Canon Service.
Do not email them, telephone them.

Tell them you think the CCD sensor has gone bad.
They will know what you are talking about and they will ask you a few questions to determine for sure that it is the CCD sensor.

Re: Focus Problem With My Old Canon S1 IS -- Followup

Just wanted to pass along my experience and report a successful resolution with Canon...

I emailed them my problem on a Saturday, and by that evening they had sent me a response with instructions and a shipping number to return my S1 at no charge to the factory for repair/replacement. Very quick and most satisfying. Kudos to Canon customer service.

Thanks again, Snapshot2.
