It is probably caused by a defective CCD sensor.
The S1 IS is on the list of cameras affected.
If that is the cause -- good news.
Canon will fix the problem free.
It is a long story, so here is where you need to start reading:

After you read the whole story and determine it is a bad CCD sensor, you should TELEPHONE Canon Service.
Do not email them, telephone them.
Tell them you think the CCD sensor has gone bad.
They will know what you are talking about and they will ask you a few questions to determine for sure that it is the CCD sensor.
..
When I look thru the viewfinder or LCD, I see a pale-violet, out of focus image with jagged and pointed details. I've replaced the memory card and the batteries with no luck.
Any ideas or comments about what may be wromg?
I realize the camera is old, but I hate to discard it if it can be fixed.
Thanks for your feedback,
Bill
