in phoenix, az during gas wars $0.169. that's when 2 or 3 stations at a intersection were pretty common. other 2 were $.0179. smokes $.25 and that was civilian price. where's my wayback machine, peabody?
Actually, the incident in question was worse; the Shell station in question is in Plainfield, Indiana, not too far northwest of here. The price was $0.002 per gallon, the apparent result of a computer glitch in the early hours of May 9th as the station attempted to update its pump price.
Some $700.00 of gas was pumped - AT THE INCORRECT PRICE - before someone reported the error.

One man filled up the tank on his truck for seven cents.
Since customers were paying at the pump, the clerk never knew what was happening. Station owners reportedly are not sure just how many people filled up with the cheap gas.
A conscientious customer alerted station owners to the mistake and the pumps were quickly changed to $2.75 per gallon.
The ''conscientious customer'' reported the error almost two hours later; whether before or after fueling all his vehicles is not known... ![]()
