Floppy activity causes reboot

Mar 22, 2004 1:15AM PST

This one has me stumped! I can usually read a disk, i.e see what's on it with a DIR command, but anytime I try to transfer files from it to the hard disk, I get a reboot. No messages, nothing - it's just like I hit the reset switch.

I've tried re-seating the data cable, even swapped out the drive and cable. This is an old P166 system.

Could it be my mobo has gone south?

Richard,

Just some thoughts....

You're probably right. An old system could have all sorts of things headed "south". Over time, the MOBO could indeed be dying because of

Depending on the hardware installed, have you tried swapping in a new power supply? (Use of extra hardware could be causing stress on the older system.)

Have you replaced the CMOS battery that could be causing settings issues? (Cheap and easy to try.)

Have you tried taking the case cover off and running it cooler?

If you have a newer hard drive, have you swapped that in?

Hope this helps.

Is that paragraph complete or was something cut off for some reason?

I don't remember whether I typed anything else in that line or not. Obviously, it's not complete sentence, but if I were to guess, I think the error is MINE and not the software.(Brain drain, I guess.)

Sorry...

Hope this helps.
