The Zi8 also has a removeable, replaceable battery. The reviews I saw on the ZI8 did not suggest that image and sound are inferior. The Zi8 also allows for an external mic connection. I bought one for my wife for Christmas and she loves it so far. I wouldn't say the picture quality is perfect, but it's certainly adequate. I haven't compared the actual image side by side with the Flip, so I couldn't say which is better. It's also cheaper than the Flip. I paid less than $90 total for it on sale, brand new, not a refurb. You might also consider the Kodak ZxD. It's nearly identical to the Zi8 except it doesn't have the up-close macro focus and there's no external mic connection, but it's waterproof. How cool is that?
I am torn. I see good and bad things about both pocket camcorders. I have read multiple reviews. I like the ZI8 for its removable memory, but not for its poor sound and pic quality. I like the FlipUltra HD for its better pic quality, and image stabilization. Zoom is poor and lack of removable memory means dragging the laptop with me for dl's. I realize both have limitations compared to full-size camcorders. I am not expecting broadcast ( or even industrial) quality from a $200+ camcorder. Help?
