Flickering screen

Mar 21, 2005 1:45PM PST

My screen flickers. I have a Dell Dimension Pentium 4 CPU 2.80 GHZ machine with a 17 screen. New about 6 months ago. I think I first noticed it after I installed broadband. Any suggestions about stopping it? TIA
David

Have you called Dell?

I doubt installing broadband is the cause. Since it is a new machine, use the warranty.

What is your refesh rate on you monitor?? The default is 60hz this will somtimes interact with floorsent lighting and cause a flicker. Try changing to 72 or 75 hz. John

How?

How do you change the refresh rate? I am not asking about a particular monitor. I would just like general information--maybe just a suggestion about where to find help for a certain model.

DAisy, The Refresh Rate

RIGHT click on a blank area of the desktop, choose "Properties" from the menu. When the Properties window loads, click on the "Settings" tab, then click on the "Advanced" button. When that loads, usually, you can click on the "Monitor" tab. You'll see the refresh rate drop down arrow that allows for changing...On older operating systems, "Optimal" was a good setting to choose although specific levels could be chosen. On Windows 2000 and XP, a specific number should be chosen. Setting is too high stretches resources...while setting it too low will cause a flickering screen. Usually, between 75-85 works best for most.

Hope this helps.

It depends on your monitor

what the maximum refresh rate can be. It also depends on if you have a CRT or LCD monitor. If you set it too high, it can ruin the monitor.

When you look at the display setting in the control panel or through a right click, does it list your monitor? Go to display, settings then advanced. Click on monitor and see what it says. If it identifies your monitor correctly, it should have the refresh rates that will work with that monitor.

I found it--thanks

I found it under the "Adapter" tab rather than "Monitor". I have Windows 98 and it is set to Optimal. I am not having a problem with flicker--I just did not know that a user could control it. I learn something new everytime I read these forums--wish I had time to learn more.

Thank you
