Flickering Samsung UE46C8000

Apr 26, 2015 10:57PM PDT

Hi, I've had the UE46C8000 from new (~Jan 2011) and have been very pleased with it. I have noticed in more recent years the 'blinking issue' where the screen goes black for a couple of seconds but as it doesn't happen particularly frequently and because I don't pass any audio through the tv anyway it didn't really interrupt my viewing experience to a big enough extent for me to do anything about it.

More recently however a new issue has arisen - the dreaded Samsung flicker/strobe. At first it just seemed to happen around once per week and only for a few seconds. Normally changing source fixed the issue and for a while I thought it was the sky box and not the TV at all (until I read in to it a little). Now the flickering is far more frequent and can last for bursts of tens of seconds going away and then coming back again a few minutes later. Definitely past the point I can 'live with it'. I've tried the obvious things such as unplugging the power for a number of minutes, changing leads, ports and sources etc but clearly there is an issue with the set.

I read about other Samsung Models where the issue is with the power board and the fix is cutting J(P)854 (and J852). Even though these instructions were for clearly a very different model with clearly a very different power board, I gave that ago (one at a time) but the set wouldn't turn back on again until I soldered the jumper back together again. (And yes I know I could easily have 'bricked' my TV doing this - I was frustrated with it at the time and in hindsight realise I probably got a little lucky here!!)

I'm now thinking a new power-board might be the only way forward - but I'm not having much luck in tracking one down.

I'm not very excited about throwing out a tv I spent the best part of £2000 on less than five years ago. Does anybody have any ideas on a fix - Is a new power board likely to help me - and where could I even look to track one down?

I'm UK based - but would look to import parts assuming they are 240/250v compatible

Many thanks for your help
Cheers
Oliver

Many thanks Bob - I did spend some time looking into this and am not sure how I managed to miss that link. I'll try it out soon and post back my finding

I didn't write for you to cut this.

Let Samsung cut this jumper. In the USA they sent out a lot of techs to do the work. So far Samsung has been mum on which models were affected and what to do when this occurred. That is, I have yet to see any publicly available service bulletin on the issue.

Ok thanks, I'll try getting samsung to take a look, but I'm not sure Samsung will be all that interested in taking a look at a 4/5 year old tv? Unless they want to save face? + I've already had a little go at DIY fix as mentioned above. Guess I could keep this a secret from them but it's likely they'll spot it as soon as they take the back off!

It's a design/manufacturing bug.

In the USA they were covering it years out of warranty. I find it sad that the issue wasn't shared with everyone. Every company has its secrets.

Sorry, I'd call and ask. If not, you have a lead on what to look for and try.
