Question

Flickering horizontal lines on monitor

Mar 18, 2017 4:18PM PDT

Hi,

Very strange problem, see pictures on imgur: http://imgur.com/a/PRMJ1

I tried disabling either Intel HD Graphics or Nvidia card -- same result, so it seems to be a monitor problem, not a graphics card problem.

Help very appreciated.

On Dell Inspiron 7737 laptop, mid 2014, windows 8.1.

does it happen on both battery and plugged in? did you try a different monitor? did you try removing the battery and reinserting? did you try it in safemode? please post the results.

Thanks for the help. Battery/plugged in: no difference. Other monitor: problem does NOT happen on another monitor. Didn't try removing and reinserting the battery, but again, happens while plugged in.

I will try in safe mode.

me not clear

what I meant about the battery is to remove it, turn on the laptop with power. sometimes a bad battery can create interference. even a loose battery can when when on electric power.

interesting

OK I will try that, fiddling with the battery, thanks.
I just tried in safe mode, problem also occurs, in exactly the same manner.

no change

Tried removing and reinserting the battery, no change.

But I should have more precise: the problem doesn't look like interference because it's not random, it's predictable: for example, when the mouse's cursor is like a cross and I move it to the left side of the screen, the left side of the cursor's cross spills out of the screen on the left, which creates some of these flickering on lines that the cursor is on. If I move the cursor up or down, the flickering lines move up and down with it.

that sounds like cable trouble

between the laptop body and the cable that goes through the hinge to the screen.

fixable?
Mar 18, 2017 6:18PM PDT

okay thanks, and is that cable accessible inside the laptop -- it possible to fix that, by myself or at a repair store?

Great

Thanks a lot to both of you, I may do that. Or go to a store to have it done. Not sure it'd be easy to get the replacement part though, I'm in Israel.

If I'm not in a hurry, since it takes a month to get here to USA, I order out of China.
