Flat Screen PC Gaming Monitor

Apr 27, 2007 11:20AM PDT

I was wondering if there are any PC Gamers out there who have a really good, wide screen, PC Gaming Monitor? I've been in the market for a new flat wide-screen monitor for the past few years however the prices were not so great and the response times were horrible.

But now with newer and newer models coming out, does anyone have any recommendations for what I should be looking for, the size, response times, and any other features I may not be aware of? I also want to stay under $300 for the whole thing but ideally under $200 if possible.

Not widescreen, but...

I use my Dell 2007FP for my gaming (mostly on consoles) and it seems to work pretty well. Before that I used my 2001FP and aside from being a bit dark from a low contrast ratio, it also worked quite well.

I would have to assume that the widescreen models Dell offers would perform similarly well. Anything with a response rate of 16ms or less really should be quite adequate for gaming however.

Thanks - I heard that I should get under 8ms. Also, I was wondering if anyone could school me on what size monitor is the best to get the wide screen effect, without shrinking the overall height too much.

I would say 16ms would be the highest you want to go on response rates... Lower is fine, higher is going to start showing some noticeable ghosting.

As for the other part... That's all completely dependent on the game. Some will only use the standard letterbox resolutions, while newer ones will likely have widescreen resolutions as well. You're always going to have a slightly "squashed" look compared to letterbox style monitors, since there's fewer vertical pixels. The important thing is whether or not the aspect ratios are correct, so that objects are scaled appropriately for the resolution, and really depends on how the game's engine was designed.

I finally found a good monitor - I think.

Here's the one I am leaning toward. The price, response time, and everything seem to be right up my alley.

The Dell E228WFP?s fast 5ms response time, high contrast ratio and 1680x1050 resolution lets you view images, documents, graphics and video with stunning detail, vivid color and fluid motion. The performance of the Dell 22? monitor is one more reason why Dell is America?s #1 source for flat-panel displays.
