Flash Utility

Mar 15, 2004 10:20AM PST

I need to flash my motherboard: (Giga Byte 72M, version 1.0 - build date 1995).
Iv downloaded I hope is the latest bios for my board but a little chicken. Iv heard about "Bios Flash Utilities" that do this without having to use any special boot disks, I guess just run the program.
Any Help Out There..?

I'll write no.

You make the DOS boot disk, put the bios on it as well as the software that programs your board and follow the instructions.

Not following the instructions is a great way to lose a board.

Thanks Bob,
So there is no Flash Utility that does this automaticly..? (AMI)
Iv downloaded a Bios ".exe" file, is this what I copy to a floopy and what motherboard software should I add..? Not to sure what files I need and what to do.
I'm running "XP pro" with a 600 Duron.

real men don't use bios flash utilities :-)

don't be scared, just look up and follow the exact procedure on your motherboard website. there are also oodles of pages on google to tell you how to do it. on my computers, I boot with a win 98 floppy and insert the floppy with awdflash and the new bios .bin file. I type "awdflash" at the c prompt and the program comes up. it's very simple, as long as you have the right bios update.

there are flash utilities but they don't apply to my board, so . . .

your only real concern is a power fail in the middle of the operation, but how likely is that?

Automatically?

No. The steps are simple, but with the conditioning of the populace with "click-here" to do such, or worse. Simple skills and reading directions seem to be "over my head" to many.

Don't fall into that trap.

- The steps are easy.
- There's documetation all over (yeah, too much!)
- boot disks are over at http://www.bootdisk.com
- You can always find someone to help you do this.
