Resolved Question

Flash Player stopped working and I can't install the lastest

Mar 19, 2012 2:45AM PDT

A couple of days ago my Flash Player stopped working. I tried to download the latest version and install it but that did not help. I finally deleted the "installed" version , but when I try to install the latest version, I get a message that the program can not install because there is a later version already installed.

What should I do?

Thanks for any help!

Steve

I would start over.

Go to http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html and download, save, then run Adobe's Flash Uninstaller.

I would then reboot, (restart), the computer to update it's settings and the registry file, then revisit the Adobe Flash web site at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=DJDZP to reinstall Flash.

BEWARE that last web page may have an "optional extra". I can see a McAfee scan option on it. be sure to remove the tick if you do not want that optional extra.

I hope that helps.

Do all flash drives have some kind of connection to Adobe? Even an 8 GB PNY that I bought at Staples for $10? I've removed Adobe except for Reader 9 because of frequent popups wanting to install something I never heard of onto my computer. My flash drive doesn't seem to be working either. If I'm even doing it right, have asked in the other thread. Steve, I hope I'm not interrupting too much. It's just that I seem to have the problem also. Could I get it to use Media Player or Real Player or something other than Adobe?

Confusion?
Mar 20, 2012 6:46AM PDT

We're talking Adobe's Flash Player here, a software plugin for internet browsers. That is nothing to do with Flash Drives and Adobe doesn't do Flash Drives or any hardware.

But yes, Adobe plants update files all over the place. I only have the Flash Plugin and I have hunted down Adobe on my system to turn off the updater, but have yet to find it.

Oops, Sorry About the Confusion...

I've deleted Adobe Flash Player, and something else, can't remember how, probably from Add/Remove. Had to do it a few times. It kept bouncing back. Now I just have Adobe Reader. If you don't use that, probably you could get your firewall to block Adobe, right?

I'm relieved to learn that Adobe has nothing to do with my little Flash Drive, which I haven't learned yet how to use, exactly. I'm not sure it's working. Will read three threads or more over again.

Oh, almost forgot to announce, my Printer is working ! Like a lot of other people I was studying Print Spooler errors for a couple of months, not really absorbing it, finally remembered my computer's main USB port, turquoise with a turquoise plug adapter, might be worn out, and sure enough, when I plugged the printer into Hub Man, it said "Found New Hardware". The download hadn't finished installing, although it said "Ready". Thanks again.

I've just found, (with the help of a friend who knows much more than me), that in the Control Panel there is a Flash entry and opening that I can disable updating.

I never knew that! Happy

Glad you got your printer working again, and thanks for letting us know.

Clarification, You Said a Flash Entry in My Computer...
Mar 21, 2012 1:04AM PDT

Did you mean Flash Player or Flash Drive ?

In my very old computer, it's "Add Hardware" for Flash DRIVE, in My Computer, and Device Manager does not list my Flash DRIVE, though it's listed plenty of other places, unless it's in several USB Root Hub categories. I didn't open all of them. One seemed to be for the mouse. The advice I was reading said if your flash drive isn't listed you need to manually install a driver?

Is that true? It needs a driver? Nobody else in all my searching has said that. But it's because my computer is old? It's not "USB Mass Storage Device", is it? Obviously I'm totally lost. Should I take this back to my own question thread about using a flash drive to transfer data to another computer? Now that my printer's working, I no longer plan to buy a new computer, and have to buy a wide-screen monitor.

Another question, maybe I should take over there, when my better repairman zapped my printer one time after a Reformat, was there a button on his? There's none on mine. It's only about an inch square, for 8 Gigabytes. Should I go back to my own question, to eliminate confusion?

Happy

Let's get away from flash drives and other issues please. This whole discussion is about Adobe's Flash Player Plugin for Browsers.

If you have any questions about a flash drive, (memory stick, USB stick, whatever), please raise a new discussion.
