Flash Memory Help

Jun 8, 2006 9:32AM PDT

I think I'm really missing the boat here so I have to ask a stupid quesiton...
Whats the difference between flash memory and just a writable cd? I'm trying to figure out why a stack of 10 cds each with 4.7gb of space is $15, but one flash memory stick with 4gb of space is $200.
Like I said, I'm just missing something so could anyone help me understand? Thanks!!!

The cost of the machines that make such plus amortise the cost of the development teams. You'll find "chips" to cost a lot more than DVD media.

So if they are the same thing functionally, people have a choice to either pay 200 bucks for 4gb, or 15 bucks for 47.5gb (10 disks with 4.7gb each). That can't be the whole picture. No benefits at all huh?

You have more research to do.

Find out how chips function (and made) as well as DVD media to learn the answer to your question.

Wish there was a fast answer to your question but you seem to be neglecting the costs to design and produce such and fixating on pennies per byte.

A flash drive is a little thingie about the size of your thumb with a USB-2 plug and a RAM chip inside. It plugs into a USB port on the PC and will fit into a pocket. It acts just like a hard drive when you plug it in.

CDs are cheap to make and you need a CD burner drive to write to them.

Two physically and operationally different items.

Make sense?

can you imagine walking around with 10 disks if you want to keep photos that you have just taken? A little "thingie" as coryphaeus said, has its advantages. Otherwise it wouldn't sell like crazy. - Amos.
