Flash Drive shows as a removable disk without anything on it

by gdking / July 6, 2010 12:21 PM PDT

An interesting thing happened to my flash drive and I would love to know if anyone has an idea on how to correct my problem. I inserted my flash drive as I had done before into my HP Photosmart Premium combination printer, scanner and fax. I attempted to scan a document to the flash drive however when I pulled the flash drive out and inserted it into my computer it no longer had any of my files on it and now reads with a different drive letter and per the properties function has no used space and no free space. Basically it is just a dead item that as a side not cannot be formatted either. I would love to find a way to retrieve my lost files and appreciate any help or suggestions any of you may have. The flash drive is a 512 MB SKYMEDI USB drive so it has no value other than the files that ideally are somewhere to be found.

Tried Restarting The Comp With USB Drive In Slot?
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / July 7, 2010 7:52 AM PDT

Sometimes the computer will recognize it correctly during a restart when the USB drive remains in the USB port.

Of course, if your computer is set to boot from USB, you might also get an error message about no boot device available but shutting down the computer completely would then allow you to remove the USB drive and restart the machine.

Hope this helps.
