For some reason I am not able to copy my backup files from my flash drive to My Documents. I right click on Documents on the Flash Drive and select send to Documents but will not send. I then tried sending to the desktop which it will. But when I try to copy from the desk top to My documents, it will not copy. I just did a scf /scannow and that was fine. Also I had done a system restore yesterday not for that problem but another one. I just got my laptop back from HP about a week ago because of a lot of problems on it Generally when I have used the flash drive to put into my documents, it tells me how long it will take, but this does nothing. So I do not know if my copy and paste is not working right or if it is the flash drive. I also went to Microsoft Fix it. If I went to Internet Explorer would that fix it? I have IE 8 and do not want 9. Thanks much.

other drivers sem to work okay
Sep 4, 2011 5:07PM PDT

09/05/11 02:53:09 AM My computer shows two hard drives: the Local Disk C and the Recovery D; and one removable storage device; DVD RW Drive E. I just put in a CD-RW from January 2011 into the DVD-RW Drive and it played okay. By that I mean I could read all of my documents okay. But again when I would right click on an item, like the Business Correspondence folder and send to Documents it does not go there. But again, if I send to the Desktop (where it appears as a shortcut) it will go there. But if I right-click, cut, and try to paste into My Documents nothing happens, and the shortcut is still on the desktop. I just noticed that in Documents Library there are two Documents. Under Libraries on the far left of the screen, there is a Documents and there is a My Documents. Both contain the same information. Also listed in My Documents are several programs I had downloaded but when I try to cut and paste them into the Programs folder they do not paste, they just stay in My Documents. The flash drive is much more up to date as it was done about August 25, so really need it to work. Would having the two Documents have anything to do with my problem do you think? And if so which one would I get rid of? Thanks and good morning. It is 2:50 AM and this 76-year-old lady is tired.

I had to use Control v to paste as the Paste was dimmed on here when right-clicked.

So your problem is ...
Sep 4, 2011 5:39PM PDT

that you can't paste into your Documents folder in Windows 7.

It's somewhat strange that you have Documents and My Documents both in your Library, but that needn't be related. Libraries are just kind of a 'layer' above what's really on your disk. In cases like that, don't use Libraries, but go into c:\users\<your user name>\My Documents.
Also, if you are an administrator (I suppose you are), look for and in the other My Documents folders in the other profile folders c:\users\<other user name>. Curiously enough, smart as Explorer is, it will show those as My Documents also, although clearly it are other users documents.

Also, it would be interesting to know what error message comes up if you use the command prompt to copy a file into your own My Documents. But it's asked a little bit too much maybe to expect a 76-year-old lady can do that (sorry, not meaning to offend you). I expect something like "access denied", which would be the perfect reason for Explorer to grey out paste.

Nothing is lost, nothing need be lost. It's just inaccessible for some reason. Only the tech at HP knows what he has done to get you into this mess.

Best of luck.

Kees

My guess is that this issue has something to do with users and permissions. Impossible to diagnose from a distance, alas. So my advice is to find some compentent and trustable local help.

Flash Drive
Sep 5, 2011 3:28AM PDT

OK, I will try that and see what happens. If the flash drive still will not do its thing when I try it now. I will send a copy to the desktop, then go to where you said and try to paste it. If that doe not work, before I call HP, I will try to reset Internet Explorer 8 and see if that helps.Yes, that is the problem, but also that the flash drive does not work . I see all of my backup on it but when I right-click and send it to Documents nothing happens

OK, thanks, but I am the only user. Except when a daughter sometimes comes over to check her Hotmail

Hmmmm, the only time I have used the Command Prompt is to type in the System File Checker (sfc.exe). I did that yesterday and all showed okay. Otherwise, I do not know how to use it.
Thanks, but I still have an extended warranty with HP until January, so will have to call them again. They have so many case numbers on me. I have better luck when I can reach an American who can speak good English, but that is rare. Again, thanks so much.
