Flash Drive conficting with my modem

Mar 7, 2004 12:24PM PST

I have a PNY Attache USB 2.0 flash drive (128 MB) that I bought recently. I have noticed that when I plug it into my system it conficts with my modem. Even after I unplug the flash drive Windows XP gives me an error message if I try to use my modem saying that the modem is in use by another program. What could be causing this? Who do I contact for help, PNY because they make the flash drive or the company that makes my modem?

My system configuration:
SOYO KT333 Dragon Plus Motherboard
AMD Athlon 1800+ processor
Sterling Communications V.92 PCI modem
eVGA.com e-GeForce FX 5200 128MB video card
512 MB of DDR RAM (Crucial Technologies)
WD 100 gig HD
Windows XP

This one might be solved by installing latest BIOS, then motherboard drivers, USB drivers (if there are such), a trip to http://www.usbman.com to see if the motherboard/chipset has issues.
Link o'links -> http://www.google.com/search?&q=usbman+kt333 finds notes about this.

The flash drive is unlikely to find any new driver.

Are you sure it is the flash drive? I have found that Internet Explorer can interfere with my modem, closing all IE sessions seems to resolve it. Have you tried that?

Thre is no reason you should have a conflict with a USB device and a modem in XP, it will normally prevent such conflicts from occuring.

Try shutting down software you are running to see if that will resolve the issue.

Yes, I'm sure it's the flash drive that's causing the problem. No, I don't have any IE windows open. I am not connected to the internet when this problem occurs. The problem seems to occur after I have plugged in the flash drive to my USB port. When I am finished using the flash drive I go through the procedure of safely removing the device before I physically unplug it. After the flash drive is unplugged my system seems to think that my modem is in use. Should I contact SOYO about this problem?
