Flaming car rams Glasgow airport; two arrested

Jun 30, 2007 4:18AM PDT

CTV.ca News Staff

Scotland's Glasgow Airport has been evacuated and flights are suspended after two men tried to ram their burning SUV into the main terminal building.

Police have confirmed that two suspects have been arrested, just one day after British police stopped a bomb plot involving two abandoned cars in central London.

"It's just being reported in some of the British media that the security services now are treating this attack on Glasgow Airport as a terrorist attack but we have to wait for that to be officially confirmed," CTV's London Bureau Chief Tom Kennedy said Saturday.

There are still "side" stories that may or may not be true. One of them is that the hospital where the burned perpetrator was taken is now evacuated. Also that other airports in Scotland are closed to traffic.

IMO, it's going to take awhile to sift through all of the reports to know the full story.

It is fortunate that the event happened during a low air traffic period of time, as otherwise, many people would have been walking through that entrance.

It was frightening to see, and must have been terrifying for those there.

The good news is that the barriers stopped the vehicle from getting into the building.

I last flew in August of 2006. Then earlier this month I went to the airport to pick up somebody. I was surprised (and pleased) at the changes that had been made. New barriers and traffic lanes had been built that put vehicles even more far away from the terminals. There was also a more visible presence of security personnel.

We've had a week of it this week

I think there has been two cars full of nails, detinators & petrol or some other highly flamable stuff found in London aswell.
Strange how they picked Glasgow though. I think its sheer luck that there were no casualties in any of the attempts.
And the terrorist who fled while engulfed in fire, well he also got maced in the face & then punched by one of the people who intervened just for good measure!

Jonny, my guess is that this was inspired by,

but not really related to the two cars in London. From what's reported, it sounds like this Jeep Wrangler didn't have the compressed gas canisters, jerry cans of gasoline, and nails for shrapnel. While the detonation method was different in this case, apparently the cell phone triggers failed to explode the device in at least one of the two London cases (the one in the theater district near that croded nightclub).

British police arrest two more in foiled attacks
Jun 30, 2007 2:10PM PDT

Heavily armed anti-terrorist police have arrested two more suspects in connection to an attack on Glasgow Airport today, and attempted car bombings in London on Friday.

British police made the arrests in Cheshire, a county located in northern England.

Investigators say there are connections between the two attacks, which could have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people.

"There are very similar features to both incidents, and through that we have linked the two," Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae told a press conference.

I think that the attack at Glasgow
Jun 30, 2007 7:16PM PDT

was as a result of the London car bombs failure. I think they were sorely disappointed at the foiled attempt & decided to have a go themselves. I don't think it was planned,i think it was more of a desperate attempt. Although i do think they are all connected. These asian gangs are connected all over the world so im sure they probably knew the culprits of the London car bombs.
