General discussion

Five years later ...

Apr 24, 2006 10:30AM PDT

... several scares and several trips to the ER with heart scares, my hubby has finally been given a preliminary diagnosis of costochondritis. Anyone have any experience with this? It would sure be a relief for it to be either Costochondritis or Tietze Syndrome. Doesn't make the pain any better, but if it can be treated and it sounds relatively benign, it would be a great relief not to worry about every twinge/sharp chest pain/etc. anymore! His new doctor is going to test for this but also re-evaluate all the meds he's been taking for his blood pressure (one of which is probably aggravating his asthma Sad) and GERD (maybe not GERD at all!) that all started when they diagnosed him as having had a heart attack (misdiagnosis it turned out) five years ago now! We've felt for some time now that, his own health habits notwithstanding, side effects of his meds and/or some being inappropriate for his condition may be contributing to his generally not feeling "right" most of the time.

Interested if anyone here has any experience (or second hand) with this.

TIA,
Evie Happy

Good to hear!

He has been complaining of chest pains & tightness and tingling in his left arm for a couple of days now. He also has bronchitis or pneumonia so the coughing probably triggered this ''attack''. He ALMOST went to the ER from work on Friday. But he's had every heart test imaginable and come through with flying colors (amazingly actually considering his family history and personal habits). I'm especially amazed at how well he performs on stress tests! I owe you an email or a call Happy These symptoms seem so similar to what's listed that I'm a bit peeved no doctor even mentioned it as a possibility before. Even if it's one of those "we don't really know much about it" catch-all diagnoses, it's good to know that enough others have had this same thing for it to have a name!

a great relief to know his heart is OK, Any idea what they are going to do for him? I have something similar but my pain is in my side just under the last ribs. All I have to do is bend over while holding something and whammo!!! Ice packs do help, so maybe Hubby could try that until the DR can do more tests?
I know you owe me a call!!!! LOL! I was waiting on youHappy BTW Cho sent me one of his coded emails and they are planning something, But like before I have been warned to NOT tell you!!! Devil hehehe

Well for starters ...
Apr 24, 2006 10:18PM PDT

... he's on meds to get rid of the pneumonia AND the doctor thinks he's had the flu too. Wouldn't be surprised at that. He's been fighting one "sickness" or another for a few weeks now. Lots of bugs went around his workplace this winter. I'm amazed he stayed as healthy as he managed through it!

The doctor gave him an antiinflammatory and a muscle relaxant. I think he's using the latter but not the former because that one seemed a bit scary on the warning label. He's calling today to ask which OTC one might be best to try first. If you ask me, he's feeling better just having gone to the doctor for a change Wink

Possibly a migraine variant? My wife has some odd symptoms, a warm foot, tingling on one side, and a kind of shimmering in the periphery of her vision. After seeing several doctors over a period of time, one hit on the real thing -- Migraine variant. If there is nothing they can figure out, maybe it is something like that. The only way to find out, I guess, is if there is something he could take for a migraine variant and see if there's a difference.

I'll mention that to him ...
Apr 24, 2006 10:12PM PDT

... he has been saying something about having one pupil dialated differently than the other, but I think he's just nuts on that one. To my eye (and I've been made to look many times!) his pupils are the same size and just fine. But sometimes he gets headaches too. So, it's worth a thought as well.

I think he mentioned something head related last night. I was just so overwhelmed by my husband going to the doctor unannounced, of his own accord, and coming home with such a wealth of information! He usually basically just goes only when he feels really bad enough, and I think there's been a fear that something really serious might be wrong. I'm glad, at least for the time being, it doesn't appear to be. I'm even more glad he finally has a doctor who wants to basically start from scratch and re-evaluate his whole situation! I guess with men like mine it's a matter of waiting until things get bad enough to do something about them! LOL

I had a very bad cold a few weeks ago
Apr 25, 2006 2:23AM PDT

I mentioned that I had a high pulse rate, due to the fever I had, but he seemed to think that was normal. But it didn't -feel- normal. Anyway to play it safe, he did an ekg, heart echo, and blood tests. The goodnews was that the only issue he was concerned about was that my ticker wasnt getting enough rest between beats. Good news to me. He gave me a beta blocker for it and said to come back in a month to see how it was working.

I had a few instances of something like that
Apr 24, 2006 1:34PM PDT

It happened at night, around three years ago, when turning over from my right side to the left. Felt like I got stabbed. It happened about two times since then, in the period of a year, I guess, but not since.

After the second time, I went to the clinic, and they immediatey gave me an EKG, blood test, and asked me a number of questions, which all seemed to rule out any kind of heart problem. After a discussion with the doctor, my own intuition was telling me that it was some kind of rib thing.

My hubby has sustained ...

... several rib fractures over the years just from coughing! But those just caused pain locally when aggravated. Along with the pain symptoms, he gets jittery and sometimes sweaty and nauseous. It doesn't matter how many tests have shown he's healthier than he even has a right to be heartwise, it's still scary. When I read the possible side effects of some of the meds he's on, my head spins. So I'm hopeful things can get better. The one scary thing is the "black box" warning label on the anti-inflammatory he was prescribed. He's not taking that just yet until he tries an approved OTC one to see if that might do the trick.

I read there'll be an OTC bone drug

in the not too distant future which allegedly doesn't have the same side effects as the prescribed ones.

Hang in there, Evie!
Apr 25, 2006 5:25AM PDT

Evie, there are so many "conditions" that mimic cardiac symptoms. Sharp pains can be "gas" in the ascending colon, tingling an numbness can be from the verterbrae (I had that with my cervical vertebrae), and "referred pain" from other sources. That being said, I am a fan of always seeking immediate attention. It is helpful if attention is at the time when the symptoms are active.

The diagnosis does sound benign and treatable.

And now he is being seen by a "new pair of eyes", who will be checking out the meds, as well.

I can understand the concern you and he have. "Not feeling right", and not knowing why, is aggravating. and nerve racking for you both.

You both will be on my prayer list!

And take care of yourself!

My similar malady turned out to be pleurisy

I'm not familiar with costochondritis, but that's way better than cardiac problems!

Hope he's back to all better soon, Evie.
