First-time digital camera purchase advice for travel, etc.

Jul 19, 2005 3:34AM PDT

Hi - I'm looking for advice in purchasing my first digital camera, with a few guidelines in mind.

First, I'm looking for a camera to take with me on a six-month trip abroad to Asia so I'm looking for something relatively compact (not bulky) but it doesn't have to be ultracompact.

Second, I am a novice but am very interested in learning more about photography, so I'm looking for a relatively easy to use camera with manual controls/settings that I could learn on.

Finally I've been using my boyfriend's Canon S410 and have been pleased with these pictures - image quality is very important to me, particularly since I'll be using it for travel photos. 4MP resolution (at least) should be appropriate for my needs.

Originally I had been considering the Canon SD300 (for size) until I noticed its lack of manual controls. I am now considering Canon's S410, S60 or S70, or the Casio Z750. I'd love to find something under $400 if possible.

Any thoughts on these choices, advice or suggestions for other cameras would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Gabrielle

The Canons S410 is a very nice camera but it does not have manual controls.

The Canon S60 or S70 would be an excellent choice.

The Casio D750 is getting very good reviews.

You might also consider:

Canon A95
Funkfilm E550
Kodak Z730 (newer version of the DX7440)

The new Fuji F10Zoom and Panasonic FZ20 are also nice. Heard pretty good review for them.

Hi Gabrielle

Looks like you are looking for manual contol in yer camera ... Thats gr8.

Since u are laready comfortable with Canon Powershot A510 (3.2 MP), and u want a 4 MP camera, u can striaght away go for Canon Powershot A520 camera.

In case u are looking for a longer zoom and more controls, u can go for Olympus C770 UZ or Canon Powershot S2is.

But always go for a camera from traditional camera makers. If u feel a camera is bulky and u wont be able to carry it everytime - don't buy it. U need to have yer cam allalong!!

Happy Photography,
Karthik
