First time buying a DVD player.... What should I look for?

Dec 25, 2004 2:30AM PST

I have never really looked into buying one before, but I am going to get one in a couple of months. I'm on a simi tight budget ($100 or less). We don't have any HDTV's, so that's not a big deal. The main problem is that I don't know what to look for. I've heard about 'region free' DVD players. As I'm probably going to be getting a lot of my DVD's off of E-bay is this something that I need to look into?

Any advice, or information ya'll could give? I'm walking in the dark about DVD players. Confused

You may find discounted no-name players at Wallymart. My Pioneer DV 250 was about 79 and may be less now. Go shopping, note the namebrands then look at epinions.com and cnet.com for product reviews.

Fry's or Walmart is the place to go. You'll get one there for around $40. In todays Fry's ad they are selling a DVD player for $15! Unless you need stuff like VCD or SVCD all those DVD players are pretty much the same.

You don't need to worry about region-free stuff unless you plan on buying DVDs from other countries [China, Russia etc]. And even if you are it's quite easy to make a DVD player region free [check out www.vcdhelp.com]

So go for the cheapest one - they will be all the same for you from what I understand.

dvds...

By the way, all the cheap no-name brands are actually the ones that'll support most formats that name brands sometimes don't. So like I said go for the cheapest one - they're all relatively the same in terms of quality etc...

One more thing... Why buy DVDs off of eBay!? Save your money, rent from places like blockbuster or netflix - WAY cheaper! Or if you wanna keep the DVD copies look into getting a dvd burner.

Simple, because they are movies that I'll watch Over and over. I'll probably rent/borrow alot too. There are just some movies that I love to watch over and over. And I like to keep them on hand. Wink

Sides, I don't have the money to rent all the time. *shrug* Wink
