first digital camera

Oct 17, 2004 6:00AM PDT

i have been taking photos for over 25 years with an SLR camera and want to finally take the next step of buying a digital camera...i've been doing a little bit of online research, but need some advice. my situation - i want 4 MP (because i want to enlarge to 8 x 10), but i have to keep the price down: under $400. don't laugh! so far the canon A85 seems decent, and i'm also interested in the kodak easyshare cx7430. any advice please?

Have you looked up a little to the dx7440? The lag time is nice and more.

I have the dx6490 and the rumored 7490 may have me hand the 6490 to the kid in a year.

Disregard my red m. I picked up my dx6490 from compgeeks.com The refurb was done by Kodak and outside the "REFURB" sticker on the box, it looked just like the new retail box. The cx7430 is at http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CX7430-R and is 197 bucks.

I just bought my first digital camera and it is a Cannon A85. Circuit City $299US. I like it so far.
BTW, the A75 scored well in Consumers Report and the A85 is identical except it has 4MP instead of 3.2. The A85 is a recent release so it didn't make the Consumer Reports.

thanks for your input. i've done more research and i really like what i see about the canon A85. since i've been using a 35 mm camera for many years, i didn't really want too much of a beginner's camera. the features in the A85 are great! in writing at least. i could relate to so much & i feel that it will be a good camera to make the transition to digital. i think i'll go with it! (i'm really excited!) just have to research prices...i will probably get it mailorder instead of paying the high prices of a staples or circuit city, etc.

"i will probably get it mail-order instead of paying the high prices of a staples or circuit city, etc."

Redcat, I seriously considered going mail order as the prices ranged down to about $168. But there were a lot of mail order prices in excess of what I paid at Circuit City.
I am leery of some of the mail order places and over the past 17 years I have bought a lot from Circuit City and never had a bad experience. In fact, to the contrary. So, I consider any "extra" I paid to shop with them is worth it for piece of mind.
I think you will like your A85 regardless of where you get it.

If you intend to shop online, do yourself a favor and avoid expresscameras.com as well as cameratopia.com.
I purchased an 8MP Nikon from expresscameras.com and it was the worst experience of my life. Also beware rebate offers. My promised rebate offer form of $200 was expired! I got taken and still haven't received all of my order.
