Firmware upgrade?

Oct 9, 2007 6:23AM PDT

I recently purchased Mac OS 10.3 Panther to try out.

I have an iBook Clamshell G3 Indigo. For the benefit of those who are not aware of these machines, it has a 10GB Hard Disk, 128MB of RAM, and a PowerPC G3 at 366MHz. I have doubled its stock RAM which was originally 64MB.

Aside from other upgrades which I will decide on (or not) at the time, will I need to update the firmware? I read somewhere that using old firmware and installing OS 10 will "destroy" the machine.

Just curious.

Should be updated to 4.1.7f4 in order to run OS X at any future date.

The Firmware update can only be installed using OS 9.x.x which obviously means that it has to be done before any attempt to install OS X.
Trying to install OS X before the firmware is updated will result in an error dialog box informing you that you need to update the firmware on your iBook.

After rifling around a while in Google, shortly after posting, I found the firmware update and did it. My iBook is now updated and ready for Panther. Perhaps a little underspecced, but I have heard that OS 10.3 will at least "run" on my system spec, so once it's installed I will go from there as far as upgrading is concerned.
