firewire for camcordors (4 pin or 6 pin firewire port?)

Dec 17, 2004 8:04PM PST

Ok well I am going to get a Comcorder in the near future and I hear in order to transfer the video files you need a firewire cable and port. The labtop that I have doesn't have a firewire port but I know I and easily add one by getting a notebook firewire card. Now the problem is that when looking for one some of the firewire ports had 4 pins and some have 6 pins, whick do camcorders use? And if it depends on the camcorder what if I get something else in the future that uses the opposite number of pins, is there an attachment or something that can fit the other number of pins?

-Thanks for your time

You'll just want the cable that goes from one to the other.

I'm wondering the same thing.....what firewire connection do most camcorders use?? 4pin or 6pin or maybe even 9pin....I found one website that has conversion cables from like 4pin to 6pin...

my new laptop has the 4pin...it looks like the cables are like $15 bucks....I'm worried that if I buy a camcorder that has a 6pin port and I use a conversion cable that it could mess things up or not transfer data as fast as a 4pin to 4pin.......I gotta ask my friend at work

I want to buy an external hard drive w/usb2.0 and firewire 4pin connection......and then a camcorder with 4pin firewire connection....and use a 4pin to 4pin fire wire adaptor.....for a minidv camcorder I wonder if this is possible and if so, are 4pin ports common on ext hard drive and/or minidv camcorders????????

Most camcorders and notebooks have 4 pins while external hard drives and desktops have 6 pins. Just buy a 4/6 pin converter and you should be fine.
