Found the solution to my problem.
I connected my DVD/CD combo drive direct to my notebook and its being recognized. That means my drive has no problem at all.
So, the problem is that my Firewire hub is not able to supply enough power (only 5V DC input) to power the harddisk and the DVD/CD combo drive at the same time.
However, if I daisychain my DVD/CD combo drive to my harddisk it'll work because the power is also being supplied to drive the DVD/CD combo drive by my externally powered harddisk.
Phew! Now considering getting a dedicated 12V DC Firewire hub instead of my present USB/Firewire combo hub.
So much so for power hungry devices
Hi!
Anybody here using firewire devices through a firewire hub?
Here's my problem
I have a 3-port firewire externally powered hub and two firewire devices, namely, an external harddisk and an external DVD/CD combo drive both of which are also externally powered..
One port of course has to be connected to my notebook. If I'll to connect the two devices to the two remaining ports on the hub my notebook will only recognize the harddisk and NOT the DVD/CD combo drive.
The cables and the ports have no problems and are functioning properly. I swapped the cables and ports and still the DVD/CD combo drive is NOT being recognized.
I even disconnect the harddisk and just connect the DVD/CD drive to the hub and yet its still NOT being recognized. This is to test that the devices are not over-drawing too much power from the hub in such a manner that one device is under supply with power.
Now, the interesting part comes in. If I'll to daisychain my DVD/CD drive to my harddisk (which is connected to the hub) - it'll WORK!! I know that firewire allows daisychaining of many devices.
Can somebody tell me what is going on? How to use my 3rd firewire port? If'll I to connect a digital camera or a video camcorder with firewire output to my 3rd firewire port will this work?
Thanks
