Firewall help--NOT Norton

Oct 13, 2005 4:15AM PDT

I am absolutely disgusted with Norton, again. This time, trying to install Norton Internet Security, it failed to install, so I was taken on the merry-go-round of help documents (all of which require MY time to compensate for THEIR inability to write software that can be easily installed). This is about the 4th time this has happened, but it's one too many.

I tried to download the basic free ZoneAlarm to try it, but it required me to find and download ssleay32.dll, which I did. Then it had problems with its own Vector Engine which it could not solve, so that's a no-go.

Now I'm in my 5th day without a firewall and tired. Suggestions?

The last time this happened I found...
Oct 13, 2005 4:21AM PDT

A pest on the machine had hijacked the Windows tcpip sockets. Today, I am trying EWIDO, WINSOCKXPFIX to detect, eject and repair XP Windows sockets and settings. At no time did I need to download ssleay32.dll or any other dll.

Best of luck in the recovery room.

Try ''Sygate [Free]''
Oct 13, 2005 9:21AM PDT

Just a suggestion is for you to try Sygate which has the a ''Free Program'' and ones you can purchase.

You have not mention which opperating system you are using?
If you are using Windows 98/98SE/Me [ XP??] and wish to use/try the ''Free Version'' you must only download the Version 2710 because with the later version you may experience a known bug

Kerio
Oct 13, 2005 9:46AM PDT

I have found Kerio to be an incredibly useful and well written firewall. The old version 2.1.5 is a rulebased firewall that is one of the lightest firewalls out there. It does an excellent job and offers very tight protection. Visit www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio and you will find a copy of the firewall. Download Blitzen Zeus's default ruleset replacement to really make it secure.

However, If fiddling with a ruleset is too complicated, try downloading Kerio 4.2.1 from there website www.kerio.com . It is a trial but turns into a free firewall after 30 days only losing the web filtering (use the proxomitron instead, go to www.castlecops.com and go to the proxomitron forum for more info) and the HIPS (use System Safety Monitor instead.

I have been pleased by these firewalls and they have caused no problems for me. Another good thing, all the options I said are FREE.
