Firewall for Win 2000?

by kc123 / October 10, 2009 2:50 AM PDT

As a friend with an an ancient Dell laptop was on the point of renewing an expensive McAfee subscription, I extolled the virtues of free versions of security software. AVG went on ok, so did Spybot, but I've hit a wall with Zone Alarm. The latest version will not install on Win 2000 and I've had no luck trying earlier versions. Can anyone suggest an alternative firewall that will work with the OS?

Thank you, Donna. I tried Agnitum, but it seemed to trash the laptop and I had to uninstall it to bring the beast back to life. And Sunbelt seems to have dropped the Win 2000 from its 'works with' list. But thanks for the suggestions, anyway.

Zone Alarm

Thank you, Grif. I had been to that site and downloaded an earlier version (not sure whether it was 7.0.483.000). It installed OK, but only as a time-limited trial version. Does 6.1.744.001 work as a fully functioning freebie?

Both Work Fully Functional..

I'm not sure what you're getting but the "zlsSetup_70_483_000_en.exe" installer file from the download link will install a fully functional free version. (I've got the same installer file saved as a backup on this computer and it's installed "good" versions on a number of computers.. The same with the installer file for the 6.1.744.001 version.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone. The laptop in question is 250 miles away at the moment so it will be a few days before I can try the next step.
