Firewall for DSL

Is a firewall necessary for DSL as it is for cable high speed?

DSL is an always on connection.

A firewall is needed for ANY connection. You can be infected in fifteen seconds. Zone Alarm (free) is as good as it gets. It will monitor inbound and outbound traffic.
