Firewall

Just read your article on passwords.
It mentioned a firewall.
My firewall is disable because I have a Belkin Router.
They "Belkin" say the Belkin has a built in firewall.
My past firewall almost had weekly updates and I new they came in by the actions on my PC monitor.
I do not see any firewall updates with the Belkin.
Is the router firewall safe as any other firewall?
