Firewall 101 a quick quesion

Sorry, It might be in another post. I'd say im an intermediate when it comes to basic computer skills. I Never used a firewall though, and I need to start.
for spyware, I user Tc which I love it has great functions. Viruses avg. Im wondering if anyone could let me know a good website so I could find out what traffic I should let through. I have windows me, ( I know ).
Thanks in advance, and I didn't know cnet had forums.

You have a w9x machine.
The need for a firewall is some what less than if you had a XP machine.
You have used the machine for years....I'll assume...sans firewall.
Why you need one now is your business.

I have a w9x machine.
I tested Zone Alarm years ago.
The product worked fine.
The cost...resource usage was a little steep.
Just be aware.

So here I am 8+ yrs later....sans firewall...no issues.

Your call.
