Firefox won't play MIDIs...

Aug 20, 2005 9:24AM PDT

The Crescendo 1.5 download page (www.armadilloweb.com) has various versions available for downloading, including: Netscape 7 [XP] and Mozilla 1.4-1.8 [XP]. Both of these use the same download/installation file: ?c51nnt.exe?.

Once this ?c51nnt.exe? file is downloaded and installed on my computer, however, the MIDIs I want played on my personal webpage (the reason I need Crescendo) play in Netscape but not through Firefox 1.0.6 (which I believe is the same as Mozilla?but here I am a bit unsure.

So, anyway, my question is: how can I get MIDIS to play in Firefox 1.0.6? (Note: MIDIs play in IE through Windows Media Player because Windows Media Player is selected as default MIDI player).

Tools/Options/Downloads/ and look at "file types". See if "mid sequence" shows there and double click on it. What action is set to take place when a midi is encountered? It should be set to open in the default location. I have FF 1.06 and midis play just fine. Windows Media Player pops right up and plays them so I know it can be done. BTW, I run XP Pro but you did not mention your OS. What might that be?

plug-in..where to find it?
Aug 20, 2005 11:23AM PDT

Thank you very much, Steven, for your assistance!
(Note: My operation system is Windows XP.)

When I open my personal webpage (which should play a MIDI song) in Firefox, I get the message ?Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page?.

I went to Tools/Options/Downloads/ and looked at "file types"; nothing like ?midi? or "mid sequence" shows there. Windows Media Player is set as the default for almost everything listed there (WAV files, Windows Media audio file, AIFF format sound, and so on) ? and everything listed is checked as ?enabled?. So, it seems that I need to get a specific plugin for playing MIDIs in Firefox ? and then I need to have Windows Media Player set up to play it?but I do not know how to accomplish this. Could you assist me with this step?

Thanks again!

Strange

I have another PC which shows nothing in the downloads area about how to handle file types but, when I play files from a midi site, I am still asked how to handle it and WMP will run from FF when I play the midi. This makes no sense. I do show two variations under Windows file extensions. One is .mid and the other is .midi. Do you show both? Which WMP version do you have? Does the same happen when you try to play midis from other sites? How about when you try File/Open file and try to play midis locally. Do other music file types play ok? I have also seen some strange plugin problems depending on the installation sequence of some programs. Years back, Netscape also had some issues with the placement sequence of plugins in the plugin folder. Can't think of much else at this point.

problem solved; thank you

Everything is fine now. I discovered that by default, the Crescendo installation went to the Netscape Communicator Plugins folder: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\Plugins

I had to redirect the install to a Mozilla Firefox program folder: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins

Thanks for your help!

Glad you figured it out and really glad

you took the time to post the solution. That's a courtesy not always seen and might just help someone else. However, it bugs me that mine works without a third party program but yours does not.
