Two entirely different browsers...

Firefox is a completely separate browser with numerous differences, including:
* More secure by nature.
* Does not support ActiveX by default.
* Supports theming for customization.
* Has thousands of extensions (addons) available for free to add whatever abilities to Firefox that you want.
* Much more customizable through the usage of about:config.
* A potable version an be run from a flash drive on any computer...take your work with you!
* Runs on multiple platforms, including Windows 98+, Mac OS X, and various Linux distros.
* Supports tabbed browsing for increased efficiency and decreased RAM usage. (Feature will be available in IE7.)

And the list goes on.

In short, Firefox is an alternative to Internet Explorer and one that is recommended for daily use due to security and performance advantages. However, Firefox is not yet a complete replacement to IE because some websites are still not compatible with browsers outside of IE.

Hope this helps,
John

I received your reply and thank you very much. Can you use both browsers? For instance have both IE and firefox icons on the desktop and pick the one you want to use as needed?

Yes...

I have many browsers installed, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Opera. While I set Firefox as my default browser and use it most of the time, I can launch and use any of the other browsers at any time, and at the same time if I so choose. They don't conflict with each other, so you can have just about any setup you want.
