Firefox toolbar shortcuts..

Jul 3, 2004 4:40AM PDT

Just updated to ver. 9 of Firefox. Anyone know if there is a way to create an "internal" link or shortcut on the Bookmarks Toolbar?

For instance to My Docs, or AIM. Been playing with it but having no luck.

Using WINXP home, and trying to get away from IE, but would like to have this option if it is possible.

Don't know, but have you checked through their extensions?

and I think that while the extensions I listed are cool, they need to go in the opposite direction (desktop shortcut to browser?) in order to do what you are looking for. As far as I can see there is no such animal yet but I have used the Hotkey solution.
In XP you can right-click on any shortcut or icon or folder and choose 'properties'. The dialog box that appears will have a Shortcut key entry place. Place your cursor in this box if it says 'None' then enter the keyboard combo that you would like to use as a hotkey while you are browsing. I use Roboform, but don't keep the browser toobar enabled for obvious reasons. When I want to quickly access it in the taskbar while I'm online, I have set 'Ctrl-Shift-R' to pull it up quickly. Also, I have set hotkey 'Ctrl-Shift-T' to access my Thunderbird mail while browsing. If you wanted to do same for AIM or any folder set Shortcut key in properties. I really am liking Firefox! Hope this helps you too.

I tried and hotkey doesn't work on folders but

there is a workaround. You can double click a folder (let's say 'My Documents') and click on 'Favorites' then 'Add to Favorites' then go back into Firefox. Go to File-Import and select IE-click next. Deselect all but 'Favorites' and this will give you a new folder called "From Internet Explorer" from which you can cut and paste into whatever place you'd like on Bookmarks, then delete it.

I just did this to easily bookmark folders in Firefox:

Go to 'Bookmarks' in your browser.
Choose 'Manage Bookmarks' from drop-down menu.
Choose 'New Bookmark' in Bookmarks Manager.
Name it and give location (Hint--to get location easily, rt-click on folder you're bookmarking-choose properties then cut and past from Location in Properties dialog box!)

This is fun!

mhenry thanks for the replies.
I do have all the shortcuts I need available on the Quick Launch bar. Just thought I could drag and drop to the Firefox personal bay, as you can in IE links bar. Actually I was able to drag and drop a shortcut to an .exe program to the Personal bar, but it wouldn't function.
Don't know, maybe a safety feature of FF?
And yes, bookmarking a folder seems to be no problem.

so i too was looking for this function some time back and found it. when i upgraded to the new version of firefox i lost the extension that allowed me to launch programs like trillian from the firefox toolbar. i was searching again and thus found this forum so i thought i would pass along the extension that i eventually found again...

http://texturizer.net/firefox/extensions/

its the one "external applications button"

install it, close and restart firefox, right click on the toolbar and choose cutomize toolbar, and add the "external applications button to the toolbar.

then right-click on the spot where you added it and choose "new button", then locate the program you want to add (i.e. trillian, etc.), lastly you can change the icon size (16x16 or 32x32) by right-clicking the icon and choosing properties. now you should be done!

it makes firefox even better!
