Firefox toolbar is gone, new one takes me to Yahoo.

by dafyd02 / December 6, 2010 11:57 AM PST

My Firefox toolbar is gone. I don't have bookmarks or anything. I got a pop up window yesterday when I turned on Firefox and there was no way to shut it down, just click ok. I closed Firefox and restarted. It was ok for awhile, then no bookmarks. There is a toolbar which may have set up when I installed C Cleaner, a Y goes with it that takes me to Yahoo. The pop up window did not say Yahoo, I do not remember what it said. I checked the forums and they talked about a hijack virus. I have AVG and it runs everyday. It says 0 infections. I have Windows Vista Svc pack 2 on a HP 6750. Thanks for your time and help.

There is a little house that said Menu Bar when I clicked on it. "Bookmarks" was on the list but nothing happened when I clicked on it.

Browser issue?

Are you using Firefox as default browser? Take a look at homepage setting internet options and see if your homepage has changed, possible hijacker. If homepage has changed reset it to Mozilla or whatever you use and then start looking at your security settings, AV software, etc.

Update process
by Willy / December 7, 2010 12:28 AM PST

If you have used Firefox before and then the pop-up got clicked, you may have updated your version of Firefox. Newer versions use the Yahoo toolbar/taskbar and is auto-installed. It USED to be declined, but no more and just installs the Yahoo stuff, etc.. If you had the restore feature enabled in your system, use it. Pick a date before that recent change and its return to the way it was. You lack some details in your post, but I hope this helps explain what can be done.

If you want to use the new Firefox, use the restore feature to an earlier date. When finished, check the export of the Firefox setup and export the favorites and/or bookmark. Then when the pop-up occurs again, allow it to install. -OR- delete current Firefox after saving whatever, then use the latest d/l'ed version and re-install. You can then "import" the bookmarks into the new version, once directed to its source.

I am going to try Willy's solution first because it seems to fit best with what has happened and what is on my page. I have to click "Getting Started" to get Firefox homepage. I will let you know if it succeeds. Thank you again for your time.

Restore Feature
by dafyd02 / December 7, 2010 11:40 AM PST

There is nothing in Firefox to get me to a restore feature. I went to Firefox help and someone said to start in Safe Mode. I am afraid I will mess up something else if I try that. I am going to download the latest version of Firefox and see if that works. I would rather collect my bookmarks again than reinstall the whole OS system. I just do not know enough about the OS system to mess with it. Again, I thank everyone who tried to help.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
