Firefox slow to load

I have Windows XP Professional edition; 512 mb; hard drive is about 3 years old; video card about 4 years old. I use DSL though local phone company.
Recently Firefox is taking a while to load. I've tried disabling extensions and add-ons. I run AVG weekly, CleanUp, Malwarebytes and Advanced Systemcare.
Also, my CD burner won't burn CD's anymore. This has been a problem for a while, so just gave up on it, but if anyone knows the fix for this that would be great!

Re: burner not burning

The most likely fix: replace it.

And, sorry, I don't have any suggestions on making Firefox startup faster.

Firefox etc.

In reply to: Firefox slow to load

First more ram, XP would run better with another 512, preferably another GB. Second, sounds as if you may have some spyware in the system you may need to get something real to clean it up, the freebies generally create more issues than they resolve.

My suspicions point to AVG

In reply to: Firefox slow to load

AVG from version 8 onwards added a Process called avgrsx.exe to the Processes list in the Task Manager. This is AVG's resident scanner, and on some XP machines, (my old XP system is one), it slowed accessing many applications.

If it is your AVG resident scanner there is little you can do. Adding more RAM will help generally, but I suspect it will not significantly improve initial load up times. When Firefox has been loaded once, then subsequent times it will open faster.

Sorry but my WOT, (Firefox "Web of Trust" add-on to rate web sites for safety, privacy, reliability, etc), gives the web site you provided a link to a poor rating. That's why I removed it.

Firefox/AVG

In reply to: To troxed. Post removed.

Removed what? I am still having problems with Firefox...web pages too large for my monitor, still loading slow. I've used AVG for a long time and never had this problem.
I guess I'll just have to go back to using IE.

I didn't explain myself properly

In reply to: Firefox/AVG

My other post was addressed to another person who was posted a web link that led to suspicious sites.

Sorry I didn't explain that well enough.
