Resolved Question

Firefox launches but doesn't go to linked page

Nov 27, 2013 12:14AM PST

Using Firefox 25.0.1 on a Mac running Lion. When I get an e-mail with a link in it and click the link, if Firefox is already running the linked page opens without any problem. If Firefox is not running, clicking the link will launch Firefox but it only opens my home page. I have to click the link a second time to get the linked page to open. This happens with every link.

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it?

That bug was happening to me last year. Later it seems to have been fixed and you are seeing it again.

Unless you are a programmer and can get into the code, I'd wait for the new version to see if they fixed it (again.)

In other words, I doubt it's caused by you or your machine.

I'll report it to Mozilla in the meantime.

I've discovered that the problem was due to an extension
Dec 1, 2013 6:37AM PST

I had something called "FB Purity" installed, which allows customization of Facebook content. It was running fine for some time but the developer must have updated it, and the update caused the issue. I've disabled it.

Recently fixed something like that on a Win 7 machine

using T-Bird as the email handler. Something funny happened with FF about version 24. It had to do with how it handled attachment but mainly .pdfs. T-Bird has gone through some changes too but you didn't mention what you were using. In any event, in this machine it turned out to be a setting in T-Bird as to how it deals with attachments. Even though FF was the default browser, T-Bird needed to be reminded to use it for opening internet links.

and posted it here maybe in the wrong place. About Adblock Plus selling out to Google and others and allowing " acceptable Ads" and you get redirected if you're not paying attention ...Here's the link->https://www.google.com/#q=adblock+plus+allowing+acceptable+ads ....Adblock Plus sold out as did Download.com . The new add on for Firefox adblocking is called Adblock Edge and it's working great .. here's a link I posted in the Cnet Browser forum -> http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6620_102-606855/i-ve-been-noticing-lately/?tag=tracked-disc;track-606855 ...Digger

it's time to re think your layalties Bob. I was getting redirects and lot of pop ups so I searched for a reason this was happening. The reason I found is Adblock Plus sold out to Google and others (Cnet?) to allow these ads an stuff(?). The same reason I installed Adblock Edge is the reason I installed Adblock Plus.To get rid of the sh*t ads and redirects. Adblock Plus turncoated on us and it's time to change the game. I know it's hard to give up old relationships but, Off With Adblock Plus's Head and time to Crown the new heir to the throne. Adblock Edge........Digger

to be clear on this... I've been one of your( and others) students here for quite some time now and consider you amongst the great teachers of all times. You've always taught me to do the grunt work before I involve others or ask for answers to obvious questions. So that being said,I'll ask this question of my mentor(s)...Do you think I would make these claims if they weren't true (at least in my instance)?, and don't I warrant my mentor(s) trust in these truths? Hopefully I do and others will investigate this post with an open mind...Digger

But need a good example before I go much further. The CNET Spyware forum is pretty good when a member pops in and shares "Hey I have FireFox 26, Adblock+ and www.lasorshark,com pops up adverts on me."

I'm always willing to test stuff again but for now, I got nothing (no popups, no adverts I didn't expect.)

I'll re install Adblock Plus and go to some sites( not necessarily the same sites I was on but just find some site) to give an example and re post in the spyware forum (much to my chagrin) as I'm not sure this is spyware as much as ads (hence the term Adblock) to prove the point. Will I also need to repost all of the examples such as these because I'm sure that they're all suspicious too?->https://www.google.com/#q=Is+google+paying+adblock+plus+to+allow+ads ? Keep an eye out in the forum you suggested in the next day or so and I will build my case ...Digger

"Even the whitelisted ads can still be blocked; users can switch off the Acceptable Ads filter with one click in their Options menu. "

So far I haven't seen anything odd happen.

For some, they may want to change that.

I looked for that setting and couldn't find it. It's was blacked out because of the Dark Theme I have with FF. I went to default (Grey Theme) and there it was....I unchecked "Allow Acceptable Ads" and No More Ads! Adblock Plus still works fine...Sorry to waste yours and everyone else's time Bob.....Digger

Dec 1, 2013 10:26AM PST

now that we've gone through this conversation , While Adblock Plus Now Requires Me To Un check" Allow Acceptable Ads" but didn't until a couple of days ago, Adblock Edge Works Perfectly and I Don't Have To Uncheck Anything and worked right out of the box as Adblock Plus Used To. Also since I have Adblock Edge installed on every other instance of Firefox , it's a welcome addition to my browser with no muss or fuss...Digger
