Question

Firefox and malware

Feb 9, 2015 1:51AM PST

I started using Firefox a short time ago. I liked the way it blocked ads on some sites.

I bought a new computer last week and went to the Firefox site (I'm fairly sure it was the right site) to download the software and picked up a browser hijacker. Just now, I opened my computer (not the new one) and there was a browser thing that looked like Warcraft or something like that on my screen inviting me to use it. I just closed the window. Firefox is telling me I need to update Java, but I'm not sure I should do that.

Am I having a run of bad luck or is there something going on with Firefox?

I'm using Firefox now,

and nothing wrong here.

First thing, I would suggest you disable any FF add-ons you have for Java. It is rarely needed now in genuine sites and it is a known problem area, with early versions being vulnerable to malware and/or misuse, and also difficult to update correctly.

You said you downloaded the software on your new computer. What software? What browser hijacker did you pick up, and how do you know?

FF does block 'pop-up windows', but it doesn't block ads in web sites. For that you would need an ad blocker like AdblockPlus, (ABP), a recognised Firefox add-on.

It took over the browsers

It took over Chrome, IE and Firefox. They all looked the same.

I think it's name was Tablica or something like that. My resident geek removed it from the browsers and uninstalled it. We just deleted Firefox.

I ended up taking back the computer, as it was just too slow to be reasonable.

I really like firefox, but don't need another problem.

I'm thinking that some may need a LockDown. Example.

It's a pop under

I just got another one. It's a pop under. This one had sound and a loud one at that. You have to close the browser to get it to stop.

Yes, It's 35.0.1

Here's what I'm using.

After I expunge the malware I install Web Of Trust and AdBlock+. So far, so good. This lockdown app is on my radar if I ever see something slip by not by my doing.

Me too

I also use WOT, and AdBlockPlus and have no problems.

I have also reintroduced the NoScript add-on to Firefox, but I wonder if that is too intrusive for some users.
