General discussion

Firefox . Address bar dropdown history.

Sep 2, 2005 12:48AM PDT

I use Firefox ver 1.0.6 on Win XP Pro SP2.

At the address bar, I am not able to get the drop down list of previously entered URL of visited sites. They are present in the same session, but if I close Firefox and then relaunch it for a second session, there is no drop down list. Only the default home page URL is shown. How do I go about maintaining the list ? I cannot find any configuration location at the Menu bar except the likely Tools>Options, but that is not it. I have been a long time IE user. Thanks.

Privacy software...
Sep 2, 2005 2:11AM PDT

As you've probably noticed, FireFox 1.0.6 does not have the ability to automatically erase a user's internet history upon the ending of a session, only cookies. That leads me to ask if you have any privacy software installed/running. Programs such as Webroot's Window Washer, as well as most internet security suites, include the ability to automatically erase a user's histroy once a session is ended. Programs set to automatically erase obsolete and junk files may also be to blame. Check for such programs/features and let us know what you find.

Hope this helps,
John

No and No !

I am a new user, and I am not aware that Firefox 1.0.6 does not have the ability to erase automatically a user's Internet history at the close of a session, and in my case, it seems that Firefox is doing it nicely !

I do not have any "privcay" software installed. The nearest things are pobably Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D. If such "privacy" programs caused it, then it would have affected IE as well, but I do not have such problems with IE.

Thanks.

Both...

In Internet Explorer, you can have it automatically empty all temporary internet files when all browser windows are closed by going tools->internet options->advanced->empty temporary internet files when browser is closed. However, things such as browser history can only be set to be deleted after so many days, not when a session is ended.

Same goes with Firefox. You can go tools->options->privacy, and under cookies, select from keep cookies until they expire, until I close Firefox, or ask me every time. However, under history, the only option is for automatic deletion after X number of days days.

Firefox is basically the same for all operating systems, and Internet Explorer has the same basic abilities/functions (although I must admit the Mac version of IE is far better), so this applies to Windows, Mac, and in Firefox's case, Linux too.

More stuff to learn about!?
That's OK, because I am still learning about Firefox on a daily basis. Lots to learn.
Thanks for the info.
