General discussion

Firefox 1.5

Dec 23, 2005 11:11AM PST

I recently downloaded this and then some themes for it. The themes download okay, then I click on one and apply. Then it says to restart Firefox and I do, but the default theme comes back up. I've tried this with several that say they work with 1.5. I didn't have this problem with the old version of Firefox. Pavilion ze4400 laptop, windows xp and Athlon processor. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thanks for answering, but I already did that. And I just tried it again and waited 20 seconds. The default theme is still there. Any other suggestions?

Try this...

It's possible that your Firefox profile (specifically the extension files) is corrupt and that it is causing your themes to be nonfunctional. Thus, I'd suggest:

* Set the theme in Firefox as the default, even if that's what it is already set to.

* Completely exit Firefox.

* Navigate to the following directory: ''local drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\random characters.default''.

* Delete ''extensions'' (configuration settings), ''extensions'' (RDF file), ''extensions.cache'' (cache file), and extensions (folder). This will completely remove all extensions and themes you had installed so that you can start fresh.

* Launch Firefox and it will automatically recreate clean versions of the above files/folders.

* Verify that there are no themes or extensions installed, then redownload any you may want.

* Select the theme, click ''use theme,'' close Firefox, and relaunch.

With any luck, the desired theme will now be used. If not, it's off to perform a clean installation of Firefox.

Hope this helps,
John

Not Sure

Mousearoma,
I am not very computer savvy, but I am trying to learn the best I can. So I wasn't sure what you meant when you said to navigate to local drive and the rest of it. So I put it all in the search box and nothing came up. So I guess that is not what you meant. Please don't laugh too hard when you read this. But please try to help. Did I tell you I am a blonde? LOL

No problem...

Don't worry about it...it'll turn grey and white soon enough. Happy

* Close all Firefox windows, including the download manager window, themes window, and/or extensions window if they're open.

* Double-click My Computer, My Documents, etc. (Your choice.) The window that comes up is known as Windows Explorer.

* Copy the following, excluding the quotation marks: ''C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\''. (Sidenote: I originally said ''local drive'' because although the local drive is ''C'' for most people, it's not for everyone.)

* Paste that into the address bar of Windows Explorer.

* Where is says ''user name'', change it to what ever the username is that you use to log onto Windows, then press enter.

* You should now see a folder that's named a series of random letters and numbers, followed by ''.default''. Double-click it to open it.

* There are four items you need to delete that are noted in my previous post. The part in quotation marks is the name of the item, and the part in parenthesies is the type of item. (If it's a folder or file, and what type.) Select each one at a time and press the delete key.

* Sidenote: What that does is delete any/all themes and extensions you had installed, as well as the files that stated they were installed. Default versions of these files should be created automatically when you launch Firefox.

* Launch Firefox.

* Verify that there are no themes or extensions installed by going tools->extensions and tools->themes.

* Redownload any extensions and themes you may want.

* Select the theme and click ''use theme.'' (It'll tell you it'll apply the theme the next time you restart Firefox.)

* Close all Firefox windows, then relaunch it. Your desired theme should be used and extensions should work properly.

Let me know how it goes.
John

1.5
Dec 26, 2005 9:03AM PST

I tried 1.5, but found it difficult to re-load my extensions, like Menu X, Stumble,and Fasterfox. I went back to 1.0.7 until the bugs get sorted.

Tried everything
Dec 29, 2005 11:56AM PST

Mousearoma. Tried everything that you told me to do and still no luck. I even did a new install from this site instead of the Mozilla site. I just don't get it. I installed the 1.5 on my husband's computer and downloaded the themes and they work just fine on his. Oh well, I guess I will just have to stay with the default theme. But I thank you for trying to help me.
