Fire Fox and Windows Movie Maker does not open - GeForce 560

Oct 23, 2016 7:06PM PDT

Hi all,

I am trying to rotate some video files. For some reason my cell phone recorded all the videos 90 degrees counter clockwise even though it was displayed the correct way on the cell phone screen. I know there is an option in Windows Movie maker (which is free) to rotate these videos to the right orientation.

When I try to open Windows Movie maker it states "Move maker has stopped working" and then it closes. I have tried these steps and nothing has worked:

1. Uninstalled, re-downloaded and reinstalled "Windows Essentials" (which has movie make in it) and restarted PC.
2. Attempted to start Movie maker in safe mode (command prompt, type CD \program files\movie maker, and then press ENTER - Type moviemk.exe /safemode, and then press ENTER.
3. Uninstalled and re-installed the latest driver for my video card (GTX 560) and not mess with any settings.
4. Double checked I have all of the most recent Windows updates.

Here are my specs:
OS - Windows 7
Processor - Intel i7 3770k
Video Card - Ge Force GTX 560

The other interesting thing is Firefox will not open regularly either unless I start it in safe mode (hold down the shift key). It will run ok when started in safe mode. FF gives me the error message when not started in safe mode ("Firefox closed unexpectedly while starting. This might be caused by add-ons or other problems....")

Because these two apps don't don't run regularly and because only one runs in safe mode, I have a hunch it has something to do with the video card drivers/settings. Since I recently uninstalled them and reinstalled the most recent drivers from Nvidia's site, I am not sure what the issue is. No setting where changed by me after I uninstalled the drivers and re-installed them like 30 minutes ago.

This problem is not recent and has been going on for years now. I just overlooked it by not using Firefox. Now I need to use Windows Movie maker to re-orient the videos counter clockwise so I can no longer overlook the issue.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

WMM is pretty poor at file decoding.

I'd use other tools. There are too many to list. http://www.wikihow.com/Rotate-a-Video for example shows 7 ways.

There's a reason why so many. Not all work. I'm partial to VLC Player. Go get it at ninite.com

As to the browser this is common when some addin fails. The fix is usually to reset the browser. Google "How do I reset Firefox."

If you INSIST on WMM, I defer to Microsoft support.

FF was uninstalled and re-installed and issue remains.

Thanks for the reply back.

I did reset the browser previously. Same issue. I uninstalled FF and re-installed without adding any add ons - same issue.

I really think FF not opening and Windows Movie maker not opening has to do with the video card and/or its drivers. I see that the VLC program you listed and recommended only rotates the video for that player, not for other players. So, the issue still remains with FF and Movie maker so I would like to figure this out regardless.

As it should be. Confusing, it can be. Here's why.

When we uninstall Firefox there are settings and more left over. This is why I have to reset firefox. Sure, if you want to really clean up FF there are prior discussions but I didn't go there. I went with reset. Here's how:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings works in its safe mode.

As to WMM, after over a decade of troubles I've learned one thing. Always try it the other ways.

Help still requested

Can someone please help me with this issue, getting Windows Movie Maker to work?

Or recommend a free program that can rotate my video files. The programs that I have seen so far either require payment, are only free to try or are deemed unsafe by Norton because they seem to come with tons of bloatware/ad/spyware.

Let me explain why I can't fix WMM.
Oct 24, 2016 5:33PM PDT

Because video can be encoded in thousands of ways, I can't assure you of a fix. VLC Player is free and if Norton deems it unsafe from Ninite.com then I can't help you again.

Norton at that point is being a thug or rogue. I'll let Norton support explain why they did that.

Need the file rotated and saved so that it is correct
Oct 24, 2016 5:49PM PDT

From what I have just read on "VLC player", it only rotates the file when viewing the file in the VLC player. So, if I go and play the file in another player, such as Windows media player, the file stays incorrectly rotated (the way it was recorded). I need to rotate and save the file so that it plays correctly rotated, regardless of the player.

Norton didn't deem VLC player as unsafe, it was some other programs
