Question

FiOS router and general router help

May 10, 2018 8:52PM PDT

I will be moving into a new house in 2 weeks and I will have FiOS internet at 100/100. What are my best options for set up? Should i buy their standard FiOS router and get an extender if I need? should I get a 3rd party router/mesh system? Do I need the FiOS router regardless of what I add on? I'm fairly new to routers but I am pretty tech savvy once I have some guidance.

The house is a 2500 sqft 3 level split with FiOS box on basement back left corner. Current owners have a rouer in 3rd floor front left corner office.

Answer
The size looks OK if you place the router in a central

Location. If you put it in the basement then you'll be lucky to get to the second floor. I've covered more with less but location is key. Why go with mesh here?

I wanted to ensure coverage over the whole house...

for later integration with home automation like SmartSwitches in the kitchen and Sonos speakers in a few rooms. Also I probably should have mentioned that I have two PS4 at the same time (my previous house one was on wifi and one was connected to wired but I'm not positive I can get Ethernet to either location in the new house)

The only way to ensure

Is to go ahead with mesh or test with what you have. Here in a 2700 sq ft home I get full coverage on both floors, corner to corner with the ISP's Ubee router. I used to have another router for more options but have since retired it as testing found no issues. Coverage extends to outside the house a bit too.

What router do I need?

Can routers, like the Netgear Nighthawk AC5000, TP-Link AC1900 or the Netgear Orbi, be used without having the FiOS provided router?

Have to write no.

The FIOS system as it stands supplies a modem+router package. So you really want to try out the supplied moder+router first. Just install in as centrally as possible.

will you be using Video On Demand?

If so, better go with the ISP router.

FiOS internet only

I cancelled my cable service and I only stream Hulu and Netflix to Roku TVs

I didn't do that.

My cancellation was almost an accident.

I moved and placed orders for the cable installer and the service. The service guy cancelled my cable install and that meant there was no cable to the area the TV was. I was leaving on business travel the next day so I asked if we could get the phone and Internet up and we went with that.

Goodbye cable TV. That was 7 years ago. At 89 bucks a month on their plan, what a savings.
